Vote Clare Dussek no. 1 for LGBT Officer.
I’m Clare and I believe that University is a great place for students to embrace their identity and to use the body of LGBT people to help raise awareness and educate others on LGBT issues in our struggle to achieve recognition and equality. I attended the NUS LGBT Conference 2012 which gave me a great amount of knowledge in the campaigns that NUS will be working on in the next year and also inspired, in me, more enthusiasm for LGBT activism on our University Campus and in our City. If elected to be the LGBT Student Officer, I would:
Create awareness for the need and right for LGBT safe spaces. Teach students and staff what a safe space is and why it is important to uphold them in our classrooms, sports facilities and Union.
Create an LGBT discussion group; finding out what LGBT students want to campaign for and raise awareness of. I would particularly like to create a positive profile for transgendered students, collaborating with NUS’s ‘Gendered Intelligence’ campaign, which is looking to offer more support to transgender students, to help trans students feel more confident around campus.
Educate students on the impact of homophobic and transphobic bullying by promoting websites designed to inform people on the issues that LGBT students face and promoting messages against homophobia and transphobia around campus. I would also like to make sure that there is Zero tolerance on homophobic and transphobic language and actions in the Union.
Work in collaboration with the NUS LBGT ‘Out In Sport’ campaign, which is looking at the real and perceived barriers to LGBT students wanting to participate in sports groups. I want to help find a way of overcoming these barriers.
Work with NUS LBGT in campaigning to get lesbians medically recognised and for the welfare and safety of the trans community entering treatment on the NHS.
Liaise with the Disabled Officer and local mental health organisations in recognising and supporting the issues that many LGBT people are susceptible to.
To continue making sure that our University is a safe and enjoyable place for LGBT students to be.
