What is Equality?
Equality is about making sure people are treated fairly and given fair chances. Equality is not about treating everyone in the same way, but it recognises that individuals’ needs are sometimes best met in different ways.
Equality focuses on those areas covered by the law, namely the key areas of race, gender, disability, age, religion or belief and sexual orientation. People must not be unfairly discriminated against because of any of these factors and we must all contribute to creating a positive working environment where discriminatory practices and discrimination no longer happen.
What is Diversity?
Diversity is based on the concept of recognition of differences: recognising that everyone is different, and respecting and encouraging those differences for business benefit. People with different backgrounds and attitudes bring fresh ideas and perceptions, and a diverse organisation can draw upon the widest range of experiences so it can listen to, and meet, the needs of its employees, students and the community it serves.
Mission Statement
'The Ethics, Equality and Diversity Committee (EED) exists to support and communicate with the represented Students, and enhance the Student experience with the provision of high quality Services, empowering Students through representation and encouraging personal development.'
Hello, my name is Oliver Styles and this year myself and Caston are in charge of the smooth running of Ethics, Equality and Diversity (EED). Our mission statement, above, states that the committee exists to ensure all students are represented, this was noticed by the NUS as we came third at the Annual NUS Awards ceremony for Equality & Diversity. We hope to move forward with EED this year by holding bigger events like; Black History Month, One World Week and LGBT History Month.
The EED's aims for this year are;
- To encourage Union activity aimed at promoting equality and diversity at all levels.
- To explore opportunities for joint training programmes in equality and diversity.
- To develop and promote good practice guidelines for equality and diversity policies.
- To promote the involvement of students in participation and representation reflecting the diversity within the University of Portsmouth.
- To promote good practice in community involvement and consultation.
- To monitor and review the implementation of the Equality & Diversity Partnership action plan.
- To increase overall participation by EED members in the Union by 40%
- To have active subcommittees in the EED at the beginning of each academic year
- To increase democratic participation by EED, e.g.: Sabbatical elections/ student council
- To challenge for NUS awards through active participation in all EED sectors
- To hold an annual Event to honour the active participants in the EED and external contributors
