Ramblings of a pixel-pushing, barely-sane Sabbatical officer and Meeja Whore

RSS

At last, I think the RSS system can be finally put to bed for at least the next couple of months - the last few days have been spent finishing off the extensions to the RSS system. UPSU.net now boasts one of the most comprehensive syndication systems anywhere (ironic timing of course - Summer is the Union's quietest period, so there's not likely to be much happening over the next two months...!).

The site can now offer several different flavours of RSS feeds for news, forums, comments, and events. The last bit of work - the forums extensions - were one of the hardest to do as I had to figure out a way of allowing for the nested forum system (where you can have a forum inside a forum inside a forum inside a forum inside.... ad nauseam) which I'm hoping to get round to doing well in advance of the start of the new academic year.

Look out for the RSS symbol in the forums if you want to keep an eye on what's happening:

RSS link in forums section view
forum RSS link in section

RSS link in category view
forum RSS link in cat view

RSS links at the top of a thread
forum RSS link in article

... and expanded to show all feeds:
forum RSS link in thread - expanded

RSS links at the bottom of discussion threads
forum RSS link in thread at bottom

Anyhoo, instead of having to burden yourself with visiting UPSU.net to stay up to date with the latest <whatever>, you can use a news reader - e.g. Google Reader - to stay up to date. Take a look at our "about RSS" page to see a list of the most useful feeds on the site.

A typical worry of mine; after all this work, I do hope I'm not the only person using this system...! /al
With the end of the academic year fast approaching and my coursework deadlines looming, I thought it would be nice to totally avoid the subject of academic work by working on another item on my UPSU.net to-do list (yup, I'm that sad that I have a "geeky stuff to-do list"...).

Quick introduction: RSS is a way of sharing news and other information. We use other websites' RSS feeds to display the BBC news headlines around the news pages, Pure:FM's "Now and next" box, Yahoo! weather information and loads more. Its main use, though, is letting us share our headlines and other news with the rest of the world.

Normally, you'd use an RSS feed reader - for example Google reader (pic below) - which collects news stories from the RSS feeds you've subscribed to and displays them in one list; this means you can catch up on the day's news, blog posts, forum discussions, whatever... Without having to trawl around a load of websites. Read more about RSS here.

So, I've been working on our RSS system. Originally, we've only had two RSS feeds - News Headlines and Latest Forum Posts, and that was your lot. I wanted to make all of our news available as RSS feeds in a variety of ways; just want to catch up on club and society news? No problem. Want to get a daily list of upcoming events at the Union? Easy.

I've also added feeds to all the news pages, under the menu on the left:
rss newspage link
... again, you just need to copy the link into your RSS feed reader or simply click on it for a nose around.

The RSS feed is also formatted so it's possible to read it without an RSS reader - normally an RSS feed is a fairly incomprehensible jumble of code and text. Although that's not what the feeds are designed for, this does mean it gives us a good chance to explain what RSS is and make things a lot easier to understand for first-time users when people click on the link for the first time.

There are plenty more feeds to be added yet - for example blog and forum feeds - but they'll have to wait until I've been out tonight (it *is* PWs after all... ;) ), and I'll take the chance to try and explain the RSS system a bit more once everything's done. For now though, thanks for reading! :o)

Oh, p.s. thingy - I've also chucked a Flickr photostream box thing on the right there -->. It shows random photos from my Flickr account and, if you need to host photos online, Flickr's not such a bad way to do it.

If you're writing a blog here and want to add a picture box like this to your blog (or on any blog that lets you add HTML), you just need to sign in to UPSU.net, click the "update your profile information" link on the top-right of the page, then wander over to the "diary settings" tab and paste the code you get from here into the "Your side-links HTML code" box.

Flickr offers free accounts, which don't have as much storage space, or you can pay abour $2 a month and store oddles of pics. Click here for more on signing up, or About 106 more words in this entry
Losing your NUS card is a pain in the backside - it was probably in your wallet or purse when you lost it, along with a bundle of cash, bank cards, ID, the number of that random you pulled the other night, blah blah blah...

We can't make losing your wallet/purse/whatever any less of an annoyance, but at least you don't have to send an e-mail out to us now to get your card replaced - you just need to take some ID to the Union's reception desk and remember your e-mail address now. No more waiting a week for a reply, no more having to pay extra to get into the Union at night...

Yeah, it's boring, but I've spent most of this week under a car bonnet/playing with Windows Media Center/MediaPortal/generally avoiding work, so I don't have anything even remotely boring to write about.

Couple of other UPSU.net changes: check out the Via Lattea menu - tasty, and do you fancy some Black Tie action after Graduation?

Recent reading: Merde Actually (just started, looks good).
Recent movies watched: Sin City (crap), Behind Enemy Lines (excellent), South Park (awesome), American Dad (worryingly accurate)
Recent websites: make your own South Park character , Google's RSS feed reader - who needs Attensa anyway?

So what have you lot been up to then?

Welcome

Welcome to my online ramblings repository. As of Friday 16th March, I have been sentenced to serve an extra 18 months in Portsmouth as a Sabbatical officer at the Union. Until then, I have to get my degree and train up to be a Sabb while running UPSU.net
