Ramblings of a pixel-pushing, barely-sane Sabbatical officer and Meeja Whore

Student portal woes...

What a surprise - the student portal is once again offline. It's been up and down in seemingly equal measure for the last year.

I'm sure it's hard work to maintain the system as it appears to rely on several different database systems being operational and talking to each other, but surely the University could invest the time - and money - so that the IT bods can build a more robust solution?

And, as a note to anyone who feels like pointing out "well, 10,000 students are probably all waiting for results at the moment and trying to use the server at the same time", no problem, but if a page such as the BBC News homepage can serve over one million requests per hour, surely UoP can build a server or two which can handle 100,000 people per hour...?

Welcome to my online ramblings repository. As of Friday 16th March, I have been sentenced to serve an extra 18 months in Portsmouth as a Sabbatical officer at the Union. Until then, I have to get my degree and train up to be a Sabb while running UPSU.net
