Hello All, Goodbye everybody! Its been a great year - there have been bumps in the road but we have always done our best to put students first. Next year its imperative that students use the building as much as possible, otherwise the money makers will take it away from us. Thankyou to all that have supported and challenged us along the way. Thanks, Chris Yorke

Hi Guys, Thankyou for the response to the Lux nightclub plans. I can assure you that your views are being aired at the very highest level of the University. However, now I need you to tell me why the bulding and Lux needs investment - beyond just trying to compete as a nightclub. For years I've heard the SU building referred to as just a nightclub - and yet so many different people use it for so many diverse reasons. I know that there are countless students, clubs, societies, workgroups, and individual students that use the SU for a variety of purposes. We need to ensure that the building makes as wide a provision as possible to the greatest number of students. So, if we are to see investment into the Union then we need to be able to convince the money men that the Union is more than a nightclub. So then, what else do you use it for and why............? Thanks, Chris Yorke President

Dearest Pompey Students,
Below I have copied in the proposal delivered by UPSU to UoP to amend Lux from being a boring, white, box into an exiting, truly multi-purpose venue. It is early doors yet, but I hope you can appreciate that the ball has started rolling..... Let me know what you think............
Draft Lux Proposal
Main Aim
To fully realise the potential of Lux as a multi-purpuse venue by establishing a balance of both a student friendly ambiance and conference room formality.
Introduction
At the beginning of the 2006/07 term student opinion was sought over the opening hours of the Students’ Union building. The students were overwhelmingly of the opinion that the
This proposal would like to make it clear that this is not an attempt to bring back the old nightclub but rather it is the principle aim to identify means to enable Lux to operate effectively as a multi-faceted venue capable of operating as a space for exhibitions, presentations, conferences, nightclub, fashion show, boxing, dinner room etc. In its current incarnation it has been identified that it is too heavily weighted towards a conference room limiting Lux and raising concerns.
Impact of Liquid and Envy
The new major nightclub Liquid and Envy will be opening at the end of April. This comes in part with the councils objectives to remove nightclubs from the seafront. There will be some expected impact upon the Students’ Union trading with the opening of the new venue, however it can also be considered a opportunity because the Students’ Union will now be in the middle of the principle area of nightlife in the city Guildhall Walk (the other main area Gunwarf remains in its current fashion). This changing dyna...

Hi Guys, What an Easter! I am still spinning from NUS Conference in Blackpool, and now no sooner have I arrived home then its off to Liverpool on Sunday for NUSSL and the new beer deal. Then once I get back from there I have to go and help staff the Sports Tour trip to Lloret de Mar! Any hows, information has come my way about the local elections and how you can go about registering your vote. If you would like further information then check out www.aboutmyvote.co.uk or look out for the leaflets in your Students' Union building. Happy Easter! Chris Yorke President UPSU

Hi Guys, I'm struggling to get to grips with why Fridays at the Union are not doing as well as they should be. Over the last couple of weeks I bit the bullet to find out what the other venues had to offer and found myself scratching my head.... I don't want to get into the negatives of other venues, but instead appreciate the posatives of the Students' Union... The security staff are far more personable and 'human'. The dress code is far more relaxed, especially in regards to fancy dress. There is rarely a que to get into the venue, but when there is at least there is only one and its short! Getting served at the bar is now pretty rapid. When you get into the building you have a choice of three rooms (depending on how busy the venue is) with the waterhole, CO2, and Lux - each with their own personalities. Drinks are cheap with the Flatrate fridays special promotions. Sure Lux isnt perfect, but there has been loads of work put into the lighting, lasering, seating, DJ booth etc. Is it really so different to the other venues in Portsmouth? There is also a real committment to getting outside acts into the building from DJs to live bands. Overall, when you put all the parts together the Union is still number one for me. What do you think? Do you agree or am I talking gibberish?! I would love to hear your thoughts at Union Council (Thursday 22nd at 4pm in Function Suite 2)! Take care, Yorkie
