If you take 2 minutes to sign this e-petition it will tell the government that we don't want top up fees to increase any more (it could be up to £10,000 a year) - in fact we don't want fees at all !!!

My 4 year course with one repeated year means I have £21,000 of debt - with interest rising at £10 a week! I know it's not as bad as a commercial loan but i'll still be paying it off in 20 years time.

Why should you pay for your education when the whole point of being educated means you can make a valuable contribution to society? Should a Doctor be £40,000 in debt before they start a career of saving people's lives?

When the Government passed the bill to inroduce Fees it only won by 3 votes - So when they want to raise them in a years time - we can convince them they shouldn't do it !!!

   The petition reads -

Since the introduction of university tuition fees, many thousands of

talented young people from deprived backgrounds have not gone to

university. In 2006 came the introduction of variable fees; the next stage

of the marketisation of English higher education. This will invariable

lead to those poorer students going to poorer universities, whilst the

rich students go to rich universities. This is unfair, inequitable and

unsustainable.

Hey!

Apologies for taking so long to write a blog - me and technology ain't the best of friends but I'm working on it!! I've got to say I'm loving this job (even though it can be a bit manic sometimes!). The term has just flown by and we've done so much - so I'll give you a bit of an idea what I've been up to ......

 Trustees report – August 2006

I received a fairly brief handover, probably due to the fact that I was involved with a lot of my new responsibilities from a student perspective last year. I am very happy to be working in an area I have a real passion for.

NUS Liberation Conference 19th July 2006

My first NUS conference in Coventry was really inspiring, with workshops covering the problems faced by disabled students, ethnic minorities, LGBT and women students. I met many other officers, which will be useful for the coming year. Although the workshops had different focuses, the speakers closing the event were keen to stress that unity of all groups will be the best way to overcome prejudice. At present we have no formal representation for any of these groups, so I plan to set up a Welfare and Equality committee in the new term.

   Money Doctors

This campaign will be run in conjunction with the university student finance department. It is a pilot scheme, so we can run the campaign as we wish, and feedback the results so that a final campaign may be rolled out to all universities. The campaign will start at freshers fayre – complete with the “money man” (Ben from student finance) giving out handy tips for being savvy with your cash. Workshops sessions will start in freshers fortnight, with the aim of students who have attended the workshops event eventually running workshops themselves.

Union Council

Chris Yorke went on a useful training course, where he met other officers who have over 150 students attending Union Council every week. He has passed on to me some key reasons why their Council is so successful – the main one being a timetabled space for it between lectures on a Thursday Lunchtime 1-2pm. This means that it is widely known among administration staff, academics and students – thus giving it status and resp...
