My First Blog

Hey!

Apologies for taking so long to write a blog - me and technology ain't the best of friends but I'm working on it!! I've got to say I'm loving this job (even though it can be a bit manic sometimes!). The term has just flown by and we've done so much - so I'll give you a bit of an idea what I've been up to ......

 Trustees report – August 2006

I received a fairly brief handover, probably due to the fact that I was involved with a lot of my new responsibilities from a student perspective last year. I am very happy to be working in an area I have a real passion for.

NUS Liberation Conference 19th July 2006

My first NUS conference in Coventry was really inspiring, with workshops covering the problems faced by disabled students, ethnic minorities, LGBT and women students. I met many other officers, which will be useful for the coming year. Although the workshops had different focuses, the speakers closing the event were keen to stress that unity of all groups will be the best way to overcome prejudice. At present we have no formal representation for any of these groups, so I plan to set up a Welfare and Equality committee in the new term.

   Money Doctors

This campaign will be run in conjunction with the university student finance department. It is a pilot scheme, so we can run the campaign as we wish, and feedback the results so that a final campaign may be rolled out to all universities. The campaign will start at freshers fayre – complete with the “money man” (Ben from student finance) giving out handy tips for being savvy with your cash. Workshops sessions will start in freshers fortnight, with the aim of students who have attended the workshops event eventually running workshops themselves.

Union Council

Chris Yorke went on a useful training course, where he met other officers who have over 150 students attending Union Council every week. He has passed on to me some key reasons why their Council is so successful – the main one being a timetabled space for it between lectures on a Thursday Lunchtime 1-2pm. This means that it is widely known among administration staff, academics and students – thus giving it status and respect. I have asked John Craven if there is a possibility that we could do the same.

   Fairtrade in Via Latea

The catering manager in the Union asked for my input as he wants to make the café fully Fairtrade. He is also sourcing as much produce as he can locally. Fairtrade and other ethical campaign artwork will be put up on the walls. I look forward to it opening in the new term!

Somerstown and North Southsea Area Regeneration Project Board

I represented the Students Union at this meeting chaired by Councillor Vernon Jackson. It was important to represent students as community stakeholders. It was also a good networking opportunity.

Birmingham NUS Campaigns Launch (6th September)

This was a really important day for learning about the background and history to the main campaigns, as well as a great networking opportunity. Speakers from Amnesty International and Oxfam were also there. As a former member of People & Planet, I was pleased to see that they were the ones running the workshops on how to run successful campaigns. The group at Portsmouth received a lot of support from Union staff last year, and I hope this continues, as the people involved in these groups will have skills to help with Union campaigns.

Start-Up Speech

We have had a practice session in a large lecture theatre to prepare for speaking in the Guildhall.

Equality and Diversity Committee

I went to a “half” meeting of the University's equality and diversity committee, many members could not make it due to last minute traffic problems. However, from the few members that were there, I was able to get the background to the committee, and also ask their opinion of my plan to set up a Student Equality and Diversity Committee. They agreed it would be a useful feedback mechanism. We also discussed a homophobic incident that had happened the night before, where customers at the Registry Pub had threatened people at the Hampshire Boulevard Pub with glass bottles, then gone back to the Registry and boasted about it. With the students coming back this is a serious concern. I have spoken the Manger at the Registry about it and they say they will be more vigilant.

This incident highlighted the need for a Hate Crime reporting centre, which I will be looking into setting up with advice from the University Policeman, PC Dave Fairbrother.

Secure-a-Home

This event went really well, with presentations and ice-breaker games on Friday night, and helping students find houses on the Saturday. The organisation of the event was excellent and they had many helpers, so there was not too much for us to do. However this gave us a chance to really engage with students and a few parents. It was fun playing matchmaker with the late arrivals and groups who needed one more person.

Fairtrade Fashion Show

Plans are going well, we have had our second casting and found all but two of the models needed. As soon as we get the poster artwork back from the PR company it will go in the Pompey Guide, Purple Wednesdays and the Website. Our Model Steph has been on the radio, and has a TV interview soon. We are also producing a video-clip of the story so far to send to TV stations.

Community Event – Global Dimensions in the Curriculum

The event was aimed at school teachers and youth workers. I was asked to give a talk on my experiences in campaigning, and how looking into Global issues benefits young people. Many groups like Oxfam, Traidcraft, Jubilee Debt and many others were there. I was really impressed by the young students who came along. They really grasp the issues well, as they are fundamentally about fairness.

Trustees – October – Elle

The beginning of term has been a whirlwind of activity and I can hardly believe it is only a month since the students came back.

International Office welcome lunch 28th September

I was really glad for this opportunity to meet the International students and chat to them about moving to Portsmouth . I hope it was useful for them to have information about the help and activities we can provide at the Union .

Sports and Societies Induction talks 28th & 29th September

Diana and Jodie invited me to talk at their induction days, to give the clubs and societies a brief introduction to RAG and campaigns.

Start Up Speech – Guildhall 3rd October

The start up session gives new students an introduction to independent living in Portsmouth . There were presentations from the halls managers, finance office, police liason officer and the Vice Chancellor. For the Students’ Union section I gave a brief introduction to what the Union offers in terms of student activities and the benefits that being part of a group or committee can bring. I also highlighted the support services that are offered by the University, from academic to counselling. I have had really good feedback from the other people involved in the session and even some of the students!

Freshers Fayre 4th & 5th October

I had a RAG and Campaigns stall and got hundreds of people signed up. All the e-mail addresses have now been transcribed and we are ready for our first RAG meeting to happen in the next couple of weeks.

One World Fairtrade Fashion Show 16th October

The show was a great success that was made possible by the hard work of everyone involved, especially Rena Ellis, Steve Baker and the sabbatical team who worked so hard in the week before the event to make all the special touches. The show featured Harriet lamb, executive director of the fairtrade foundation, an international model plus student and child models, as well as break dancers, the dance club and an African vocal group. We got lots of radio exposure, the BBC were filming and we got a great write up in the local news – so I’m very proud that this event put the Union forward in such a positive light.

Union Council 19th October

Chris Yorke chaired the meeting which was really well attended and a new chair was elected. Some interesting questions were raised and I look forward to working with the new chair to make sure Union Council becomes the strong, democratic space that it should be.

Islamic Society Day of Fasting – 18th October.

I will be supporting the one day fast, not for religious reasons, but to support the society and remember all the millions of people who don’t have enough to eat in the world.

Amnesty International Campaign 20th & 21st October

We sold Amnesty International Badges in the Union on the Friday night and at a DJ Yoda gig on the Saturday Night that my friend was organising. The main aim of the Saturday night was to get a picture of DJ Yoda with the “Protect the Human” sign next to him on the DJ booth. The sign was there but as I forgot my camera so I am still searching for other people who got pictures, so I can send one to Amnesty!

Breast Cancer Night 27th October

A very successful evening selling the Breast cancer badges, all thanks to our helpers – especially the cheerleaders. A few of the girls had relatives who were personally affected by breast cancer, but all of them worked wonders in getting a huge amount of money (over £550) for valuable research.

Top Up Fees Demo – London 29th October.

I took a group of 13 students to the fees demonstration in London . The Government is proposing lifting the cap of £3,000, to anywhere as much as £15,000. This would lead to different Universities charging different amounts for the same course, and access to education being about money not ability. Education is a right, not a privilege - and Top Up Fees are a huge barrier to education for those from poorer backgrounds and under-represented groups (and just about everyone else - I've got £21,000 worth of debt - interest rising at £10 a week!)
It was a really good day out and a nice mix of students from different years and backgrounds. The Government is not reviewing lifting the cap of £3,000 on fees until 2008, so I hope that in the next couple of years we will raise to profile of the campaign. The original introduction of top up fees only scraped through parliament by 316 votes for, to 311 against and there were many MPs speaking at the demo in favour of scrapping fees. - If they had not gone to war in Iraq they could scrap fees and reimburse everone who has payed them for the last few years, and build an education system fit for a 21st century "developed" country...just an idea...

Student Support issues

I have been helping students with a number of different issues including finance, housing, racism and personal attacks.

Trustees Report  – November

Union Council

The second Union Council saw the new chair taking his place and he did an excellent job. Four complicated motions were put forward and we met up to discuss how these would be put to Union council. We also found a few “holes” in the constitution which I will be working on to put right. This may take a couple of months at least as it involves the constitution being re-written.

RAG

We have had a couple of meetings, elected our committee and chosen the charities we will be raising for this year. I am very happy with the team, they have a range of skills and experience which will be really useful. Plans are underway for a launch night on Dec 1st – World AIDS day. The dance club are doing a dance off, it is a “wear it RED” night, and we will be collecting on the night. The People & Planet society will also be dressing  up as doctors & nurses, to collect a petition asking the government to do more to meet their promise of “AIDS treatment for all by 2010”.

We will be asking people to give in their mobile phones too. The money will go the National AIDS foundation and the Union will also get Argos vouchers.

Sexual Health Campaign

This will also be running in the week around world AIDS Day. Sex Sense, the local sexual health department will also be coming into the Union to give out advice and promotional gifts and materials.

Ethics, Equality and Diversity Committee

This is my proposed new committee that will come into action in January. The new committee will include a Black student’s officer, LGBT officer, Women’s officer, Environmental officer, International officer, Disabilities officer and a Mature Students officer. I sent a couple of students to the Black students conference in Wolverhampton , with the view that they can run for the BME position or contribute to this committee. I am still working on what form this committee will take as it is all linked to Union Council structure.

Conservation Volunteering

I went on one of Diana’s conservation volunteering projects and made good links with people there. There is a possibility that we could get up to £50,000 as a grant to start up our own conservation/landscaping project here at the Union .

Sound Impact Awards

The Union is participating in the Sound Impact Awards – an environmental performance award scheme. Although we will not win as our performance could be very much improved – The audit we carry out will be really useful to see what we need to do. We also need the cooperation of the University to meet the criteria, as they supply our services – Electricity, Heating and Water. I went to a nussle conference to find out more about the scheme and also talked to them about the possibility of our Union being included in a new pilot scheme they are running which will reduce our energy bills.

People & Planet Campaigners Conference

I was on the panel of experts at the weekend for a workshop – Are Universities really going green? The panel included Gareth Simkins, consultant on University environmental management and Victoria Hands, LSE Environmental officer.

Gareth’s research showed that if a university does not, as a minimum, adopt all 4 of these vital factors, it is unlikely to have significant success in achieving high environmental performance.

-The active, public support of senior university management
-Full-time staff dedicated to environmental management
-A written, publicly available environmental policy
-A comprehensive environmental review or audit

I am really pleased that after 2 years of campaigning by the People & Planet Society, the University are getting an environmental officer as it will massively reduce our carbon emmissions, cut our huge energy bills, boost our reputation and set a good example for students.
