Diary entries by ellegray in February 2007

   Hey guys,

If you're looking for a really memorable trip over the Easter Holidays come and join the Amsterdam Hitch-Hike and raise some money for RAG! Every year the Union picks 3 charities to raise money for through a wide range of activities and events.

If you thought that Hitch-Hiking is dangerous - you're wrong, it is actually a dying art form! OK, that may be pushing it a little, but many student unions have these trips every year and there has never been ONE safety incident. We have lots of safety measures in place so we track you as you go...... and we have a party planned for when everyone arrives in the 'Dam - including the prize giving that includes 2 tickets to the most amazing festival of the summer - Bestival! Wooden spoon or possibly some clogs for last place Wink

So grab yourself some mates or come to the meeting to meet people and get more information

Wednesday 28th February, 5pm in the Union

The show is in its second year now and was organised by the People & Planet society. The first show was held in December 2005 to celebrate the University gaining “ Fairtrade University ” Status and was an amazing celebration of dance and culture with many different societies taking part. Local legends, the SUMO djs provided the after party tunes and we collected 400 signatures asking the Government to treat developing countries fairly with international trade rules.

We even went to Downing Street a few days later to hand in our “Votes for Trade Justice” along with 750,000 others!

The show this year was an altogether swankier affair as we had a top international model involved. Catwalk glamour was interspersed with our own fantastic dance club and break dancers.  Catch the show on BBC2 @ 12 noon, Sunday 10th February.

As part of Fairtrade Fortnight the People & Planet society have organised a talk on “The Future of Fairtrade” on Thursday 1st March @ 7pm in Park Building 2.23. You can find out more from some really interesting speakers including Simeon Greene who represents Caribbean banana farmers, and there will be free Fairtrade refreshments!

The first of February 2007: Participate in the biggest mobilization of Citizens Against Global Warming! The Alliance for the Planet (a group of environmental associations) is calling on all citizens to create 5 minutes of electrical rest for the planet. People all over the world should turn off their lights and electrical applicances on the first of February 2007, between 10.55 and 11am in British Columbia, 1.55pm and 2.00pm in New York, 18.55 for London, and 19.55 for Paris, Bruxelles and Italy. This is not just about saving 5 minutes worth of electricity; this is about getting the attention of the media, politicians, and ourselves. Five minutes of electrical down time for the planet. This does not take long, and costs nothing, and will show all political leaders that global warming is an issue that needs to come first and foremost in political debate.

Why Feb 1? This is the day when the new UN report on global climate change will come out in Paris. This event affects us all, involves us all, and provides an occasion to show how important an issue global warming is to us. If we al participate, this action can have real media and political weight.
