An occasional commentary on the fundamental things in life Student as stereotype
I brushed on the subject of the student stereotype in one of my earlier blogs, saying that there is a general feeling among non-academics that students are lazy, drunk, beans-on-toast-eating, soap dodging, drug-dustbins. I asked why it is that we are happy both to live down to that stereotype it and to not try to disprove it.

Although you make some valid points, I resent you the comments on the so-called 'Sportos'. Many students play sports at our University (well over 3, 500) and although a minority may live up to the stereotype you are so keen to quash, many don't.
Our sports AU is one of the biggest and best and those who play sports regularly represent our University at local, regional and national levels. No one ever slates a team when they do well and so what if at the end of the day they want to unwind and have a drink. Also, people from the AU get involved in many other activities that you state are worthwhile. The AU Exec helped at the past VIP Christmas events, both the rugby and cricket teams helped organise charity events for RAG and there are many more examples. I believe that it is one of the most harmful misconceptions that if you play sports you don't care about your Union - it's totally untrue! Jenny Leggott (BA (Hons) Drama and English) -

I understand what you're saying, but the "sportos" are unfortunately one of the larger and louder elements of the union, and one look in the Purple Wednesdays section of Pugwash News is enough to see that there's a big culture of drinking either entrenched or enshrined in the sports culture.
In the interviews with sportos there are at least four questions pertaining to alcohol and drunkenness in a positive light. It's fair to say that it's not just the sports element that drinks to excess, just that they're obvious. I never said that playing sports means you don't care for the Union, I'm well aware that representing the union is a big deal, and that the students are proud of the University. I'm just ashamed to be associated with an attitude of drinking. Jonathan Goddard -
