What are the effects of bullying and harrassment?

Bullying and intimidation can have a negative effect on the health of individuals.

The following are examples of symptoms:

  • Sleeplessness
  • High blood pressure
  • Anxiety/depression
  • Loss of self-confidence
  • Poor concentration
  • Attendance problems
  • Alcohol problems

The following are examples of signs of bullying and harrassment: 

  • Victims of bullying and intimidation are likely to under-perform
  • They can become indecisive, appearing less competent and therefore vulnerable to discipline
  • They are likely to become more and more isolated
  • The resulting stress can damage personal relationships and can also lead to, for example, drug taking, increased use of alcohol and heavy smoking
  • Such behaviour can also lead to students withdrawing from the University.
