If cars don’t quite do it for you, and you want something a bit more economical and funky at the same time, then we bet that a scooter or moped might be more up your street. Check out our consumer reviews to see which one you should be investing your money in.
When the time comes to actually buying yourself a car or motorbike, there are a few options – a car dealers forecourt, car supermarket, motorcycle dealership or a classifieds listing. We’ve got that covered too – Review Centre includes reviews of both of these!
Top Budget Superminis
- Citroen Saxo – the Saxo has been a popular little supermini since it’s introduction. Replacing the Citroen AX , the Saxo has been a bit hit with families after a second car, students on a budget, or those who fancy the idea of a car which is easy to modify.
- Fiat Panda – one of the mainstays of Fiat in the UK, the Panda has proven to be such a success since it’s 1980 introduction that Fiat actually went as far as re-inventing it for the 21st century, introducing a sporty Fiat Panda 100HP , and even a move into the small SUV market with a 4x4 version. Critics rave about the good reliability. Owners rave about the retro looks.
- Ford Fiesta – with over 30 years of production, the Ford Fiesta must surely be a class-leader in the supermini world. Ford have re-invented this miniature workhorse (should that be “workpony”?) so many times and yet it’s still a Fiesta. Own one of these and you’ll be too excited to have a siesta!
- Nissan Micra – Japanese manufacturer Nissan brought the Micra in to challenge their main competitors Honda . Again, the Nissan Micra is a familiar member of the Nissan line-up, and has a 25 year pedigree and many incarnations, including the recent Nissan Micra C+C , a convertible hard-top version.
- Skoda Fabia – We’re not likely to forget the brand whose cars used to cost less than the petrol in it’s fuel tank. But since Volkswagen got into Skoda’s driving seat, the infamous brand has turned a corner and is fast becoming the class leader in budget supermini’s. The Skoda Fabia is the baby of the Skoda family , and has been described as a “VW Polo in a Czech suit” by many.
- Peugeot – Peugeot have one of the widest ranges of budget supermini’s in the UK today. With the Peugeot 106 , Peugeot 107 and the boy racer legend Peugeot 205 all taking the city car grouping, and superminis like the Peugeot 206 and the new Peugeot 207 forming the pride of the lion-badged French manufacturer, Peugeot are still going from strength to strength.
- Vauxhall Corsa – Ironically, the original version of the Vauxhall Corsa was the renowned Vauxhall Nova (remember the TV advert with “La Bamba” playing in the background?). These days, Vauxhall mostly let knitted puppets drive the Corsa for advertising purposes. That aside, these little superminis are the driving force behind Vauxhall’s 21st century image. Funky looks, good economy and very respectable levels of reliability make the Vauxhall Corsa a popular choice amongst students and families alike.
- Fiat 500 – Italy’s answer to the Mini Cooper and the Volkswagen Beetle feels like it’s been round for as many years as the name suggests. In fact, In January 2008 Fiat began advertising the new Fiat 500 , a redesign of the 50 year old legend which is keeping the retro styling of it’s older version. No wonder it topped the Sexiest Cars list in Top Gear Magazine’s 2007 poll.
- Volkswagen Golf – The VW Golf is by far the biggest selling car Volkswagen have ever produced. This legend is regarded as the vehicle which heralded the “hot hatch ” generation. Just don’t get hopping mad at the fact that in the USA the Volkswagen Golf was known as the “Volkswagen Rabbit”!
Fantasy Island
Dreams never really hurt anyone (unless they make you sleepwalk…). When you dream about cars, what are you driving? A BMW 1 Series coupe? Maybe an Audi R8 ? Perhaps you drive an Aston-Martin and feel a bit like James Bond? Or perhaps you agree with Jeremy Clarkson when he sings the praises of Lamborghini ? Or, like too many of us, one day you plan to drive the Bugatti Veyron.
The journey doesn’t end there!
No car would be complete without essential car accessories and add-ons to make it “yours”.

Insurance, assurance and reassurance
With our door mats straining beneath the weight of mass mailed letters and leaflets about who to insure your car with, it’s becoming a bit of a minefield when choosing which insurance company we should be going to for car insurance. So, Review Centre has a dedicated student car insurance section to list those who offer specialized insurance policies for students.
And, if you still can’t decide, we also include information on insurance comparison websites like Money Supermarket , so you can shop around and get the best value car insurance without the hassle.
