So Far Lynsey Hayward has...

  • Campaigned for Course Reps to get the recognition they deserve and now they actually get REWARDED for their hardwork!
  • Presently I'm campaigning & putting forward a paper to the University that there should be student representation on academic appeal panels.
  • Longer library opening hours for your exams in May/June.
  • I have put together an online questionnaire at upsu.net containing problems that have been brought to my attention, i.e. students not receiving receipts for their coursework. This will be collated and given to the University to improve their practises.
  • I have created a "Course Rep Exec' Committee" that have volunteered to make students' voices be heard, by addressing problems that students have with members of the University

This year I will...

  • Get the University bus to travel later at night so that students, for example, from Langstone, can leave the library later and also be able to get home. (This is essential!)
  • Get a standardised hand-in system throughout the University by the start of next year so that all students receive a receipt for their coursework, meaning that even if your department mislays coursework there will proof that you handed it in.
  • Make sure that students know who their course rep is by the end of the year by electing the 2nd & 3rd year reps at the end of this academic year. This will then speed up the training process in October.
  • Make sure there is student representation on academic appeal panels so the student has a fair and equal hearing instead of having 3 academics on the panel (research has already begun on this).
  • Focus on the library by increasing key texts for students and also creating longer opening hours throughout the year.
  • Create a course rep page on upsu.net so I can get in contact with course reps via this and all you course reps can support each other.

I believe that students are the focal point of the University and your voice is a very powerful one and without your voice I would not be able to carry out my job. This year I have put all my effort into establishing a relationship between the student, Students' Union & the University. Now I want to proceed from words into actions!

  • Make a difference to your education...

Questions

1. What do you envisage the role of Education & Representation Officer to be?
A very important one that I will have already done for a year, and know that I am the only person to continue the role for another year.

2. Do you believe that meetings are the most efficient way of achieving things and why?
Meetings...Meetings...Meetings... that’s all we hear these days! We need RESULTS and these can only be achieved by ACTIONS, which can only be achieved by LYNSEY.

3. What qualities do you have that would aid you in the role of Education & Representation?
I have all the qualities that would aid me in the role of Education & Representation, that’s why I was elected last year and have tried my best achieve good results for the students.

4. As the Education & Representation Officer you will be responsible for Course Reps. What ideas do you have that will enhance this structure?
I have already enhanced the structure a great deal, however, I know there is room for plenty more! The University and myself have come to an agreement with the reps receiving rewards for all their hard work. I have also created a “Course Representative Executive Committee” that meet with me and the University on a regular basis. These students are there to be the voice of the other 20,000 students. This has never happened before so is a giant step forward.

• BUT make sure you have fun ; )

6. What experience do you have that might suit you in this role?
I have all the experience that will suit this role and I want to enhance my experience by representing you students for another year. I don’t want to start from the beginning, I want to develop this role and make this role grow so that you the students benefit! I want to achieve MORE!

7. If you could invent a course what would it be and why?
BA (hons) in touch cup, because it would be only course that incorporates the whole concept of a “DRINKERS DEGREE” (usually what parents call a 2:2)

8. What is the most useful thing you have been taught during your education?
How to down a jug of Snakebite in less than a minute! Ha!

9. As a sabbatical, networking is essential & important, what is your best ‘networking line’?
I’VE DONE IT ONCE, I CAN DO IT AGAIN!
