What is the Union?

The University of Portsmouth Students’ Union is an independent department within the University. Students’ Unions have been around since just after the First World War as a way to concentrate the opinions of students nationwide into a force for change. These days, they are also concerned with the rights, welfare and development of students within their chosen Universities. Should you find you have trouble on your course, the Union can help. If you’d to get more out of your three years in higher education than just a degree, the Union can help.

Democracy

Each year, six students are voted by the entire student body to represent their views. For the next year, they control the running of the Students’ Union and direct policy according to the changing needs of students. They are supported by an experienced team of staff, and together they keep the Union working for you.

How we support you

Our support for students manifests itself in many different ways; we support all the activities undertaken by students - from hockey and snowboarding, to the Muslim and Rock Music Appreciation societies.

We also run entertainment facilities carefully designed to meet your needs – music that has been chosen by you, in our freshly refurbished 2,500 capacity Union venues, and transport home for everyone to use through our safety bus scheme.

We can also work with you to develop your skills in creating student media, polishing your presentation abilities, and many other useful skills that will hopefully improve both your grades and your confidence when you're hunting for your Graduate job.

The mission statement of the Union is to enhance the student experience; we are here to help in whatever way we can and are always open to your suggestions for new ways we can help to make your time here at Portsmouth as good as it can be!
