Download Jay Rosa Murphy - Ethics and Environment - Manifesto.docx

- - - - -

Hi, I’m Jay Rosa Murphy, a third year American Studies student, and I want to be your next Ethics and Environment officer.  I am passionate about ethical issues; I have campaigned against companies who have neglected their responsibilities towards both workers and the environment. As well as this, I have been involved in campaigns against cuts to education and the public sector.  I believe my passion and interest in these issues would enable me to make a positive change throughout our University.

If elected, I will:

8]·     Aim to increase both vegetarian and vegan food options across campus. As well as providing an increased choice to our students, this would also promote a healthier and more sustainable attitude to food consumption across our University.

8]·    Campaign to change the way water is provided at our University.  Water should be free and readily available to all which is why I would lobby the University to install drinking water fountains across campus, and aim to get reusable drinks bottles on sale in the union shop. If achieved, this will hopefully lessen the need for expensive bottled water that negatively impacts the environment.

8]·    Work with all of our halls of residence to increase their recycling behaviour, and promote environmental living in conjunction with schemes such as Student Switch-Off, that offer incentives for students who actively aim to reduce their power consumption.

8]·    Our University has lots of students who are already involved in groups and societies that campaign on both ethical and environmental issues. As well as supporting these groups, I will also help students who want to set up new groups or awareness campaigns for on-going issues. I would also like to help make People and Planet an active society once again.

8]·    Cycling offers a cheap and healthy transport alternative, as well as being environmentally friendly, which is why I would also like to lobby the university to create a cycle hire scheme for our students, as well as aiming to secure additional areas for bike storage across the University.

So don’t hesitate to vote Jay Rosa Murphy #1 for Ethics and Environment officer in the student officer elections!
