Manifesto International Students' Officer Karen Kristiane Henriksen
Hello, I'm Karen, a 4th year Norwegian student of International Relations and Chinese at the University of Portsmouth. Through work with the Amnesty International student society here at UoP I have come to realise that the university and the student societies suffer from a lack of involvement of the international student population. After the incident at the London Metropolitan University earlier this autumn, where international students found their visas had been revoked en masse, I feel it's more important than ever to increase international involvement and visibility in British universities, to make sure that we are seen, heard, and accepted as an integral part of the university community!
As an International Students' officer I will:
• Make sure the international students have a strong voice to represent them in Student Council.
• Make sure that international students are heard and considered whenever the university makes decisions that affect them.
• Get the international office involved with actively providing information on how student democracy works, and inform and guide new international students toward involvement at the very start of their programme.
• Work with the Union in order to create a more welcoming environment for student societies to attract and interact with new members outside Freshers' fair.
• Do my very best to prevent a situation similar to that of the London Metropolitan from ever happening at our university by campaigning against the current visa regime.
I have 3 years of experience as an international student in societies at UoP, I know the barriers keeping international students from getting involved. I will provide higher visibility and a louder, clearer voice to all 2,841 international students at University of Portsmouth and an even richer and more international experience to home students!
