Manifesto for Mature Student officer

I’m Mariano people know me by Mario, a Mature Student in my 1st year of Petroleum Engineering degree course at the University of Portsmouth. I feel I am aware of many issues relating to being an older student, and have frequently wondered who I should contact with my concerns and questions.

I was the Centre Representative of my previous institute were I gained valuable experience, liaising students voice to the right departments and the right people, I can understand the difficulties of combining studying and family life. I would look forward to discussing with other mature students ways of improving our life whilst at university.  

Evidently, these are just a few of the problems faced by mature students with dependents, each student and family has different needs. I will be available to all students to listen to their needs and represent them within the Union.

My objectives are:

• Be a ‘first point of call’ for mature students

• Oppose any discrimination against mature students

• Identify and represent all mature students issues within the University of Portsmouth

• Ensure that all undergraduate/postgraduate students who bring issues to me are kept abreast of their query

• Highlight and improve services that mature students require

• Ensure that I am always contactable and within reach of mature students

• Learning resources and techniques – First-time students find it dauntingly new, returning students find it’s all changed from what we remember (or think we do)

• Social and recreational facilities – We all want to enjoy our time at University of Portsmouth.  It is years of our lives, it shouldn’t be all work and we all should have a memorable/fantastic time

• Organize family social events
