Quick guide to using the board

Getting to the forums

When you click the "forums" link at the top of any UPSU.net page, you will be taken to a list of the main areas of dicsussion the board covers. Click on one of those links and you will be taken to a list of the individual forums (or "rooms") in each category. Clicking on the title of the room will take you to a list of the discussion topics (or "threads") that have been submitted (or "posted") in there by other users of the forums.

Replying to a post

If you would like to contribute to a discussion, click on the "reply" button below the post you want to reply to. This will place a reply at the bottom of the topic you are reading. Bear in mind that you should keep your reply on-topic and to the point, and make it clear who you're replying to to avoid any misunderstandings!

Once you have typed your reply, clicking on "submit" will send the post to the forum software. If the forum has reviewing enabled, your post will not be visible or published until a moderator has read the content and approved it. This is usually used in forums where good control over the content is required, for example advice forums.

Note that you can only post in a locked topic or forum if you are a moderator!

Creating a new post

If you've got something you want to say, first make sure you choose the forum to post in carefully - if you post in the wrong forum, your topic may be deleted or moved, and you probably won't get the responses you were looking for! Each forum has a brief description of the sort of discussion which is appropriate to that forum.

Click on the "new" button at the top of the forum you want to place your topic in. Enter a concise, meaningful title, and once you're happy with the post, click the "submit" button at the bottom.

What is boardcode?

Boardcode are special tags that will allow you to format your messages. Currently, SimpleBoard supports links, bold, italic, bold, "quoted" text, img, size, list and colored text. The tags are used as follows:

Bold will produce Bold

[i]Italic will produce Italic

Underline will produce Underline

Size will produce Size

Red will produce Red

will produce a image with a width off 150 pixels.
Please remember you can go to a maximum width of 499 pixels.

[ul][li]item 1[/li][/ul] will produce an unordered list, but please keep in mind you'll have to insert
the [li][/li] tags around the list items. See example below.
[ul][li]item 1[/li]
[li]item 2[/li]
[li]item 3[/li][/ul]
 • item 1
 • item 2
 • item 3

The [ol] tag will produce a similar list, but ordered (with numbers):
[ol][li]item 1[/li]
[li]item 2[/li]
[li]item 3[/li][/ol]
 1. item 1
 2. item 2
 3. item 3

http://www.yahoo.com will produce http://www.yahoo.com
Yahoo! will produce Yahoo!
Quote
will produce
Quote

Etiquette

This is an open discussion forum and the large majority of the busiest forums can be seen by any member of the public. Remember that you have agreed to the forum's and UPSU.net's Terms and Conditions document, which outlines acceptable behaviour on the forums and the rest of the site.

Also, please don't "troll" (post with the intention of starting an argument) or "post whore" (post excessively just for the sake of it) - forum moderators are instructed to remove or edit posts which they believe fall into these categories, as well as posts which contravene other site rules. If your post is removed, you may not receive a notification as to why it was removed, but we will normally attempt to inform you if this takes place.

A last note on swearing - certain swear words will flag a warning to the moderators, who will either edit it out or remove your post entirely. If you insist on posting profanities on the board, your account may be suspended or terminated. Remember that your account grants you the use of your NUS card; therefore, if your account on UPSU.net is withdrawn, you may lose your entitlement to NUS membership.
