(Sorry, I'm post-whoring a bit today) - Is the student portal running slowly for everyone?
Spoke to ISO about it yesterday and one of their guys reckons it's because it's just a busy time of year, but it's just as slow when you try and access it at 4am as when you try and get on it at 4pm, so what on earth's going on?!
Grr... I need to see how many units I've failed last semester

Thanks...
Bombhead - go to your department's administration office and ask them if they can provide you with a copy of your timetable. Failing that, try contacting your course leader and explain the problem. They should be able to advise and you may be able to get some help from them (although I had problems with the portal last year not giving me my full exam timetable - eep!).
I think I may have just kicked off a fight with ISO on a related matter now, so if no-one hears from me again, they've probably fed me to the fishies...
Right, I have a few tips and tricks that COULD help in the portal matter -
BUT I WANT TO MAKE CLEAR: I AM NOT a member of the Tech Staff or support! (So if it does wrong, you can't blame me )
Right:
Trick 1)
Use the universities cache : wwwcache.port.ac.uk port 81.
This means that your loading it directly off the uni - and can also be a lot quicker accessing uni pages. It also is the same as being 'on campus' but being at home or whatever.
In other words - means you can access the N: and L: if you could not before.
Go direct to the site: https://webapps.iso.port.ac.uk/students/login as this is the login page. It means it avoids a middle page of 'Is this user logged in?' which, when the server is 'busy' can make the difference between connecting and giving up for the day.
Trick 3:
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE IMPORTANT INFORMATION READY! Lets say your printer broke, you just managed to get a timetable on a browser, and you forgot what you have next. There is no rule of keeping a page open on a portal - save it to disk, keep it open, whatever. Means you won't have to login again.
Trick 4)
phone the helpdesk ext: 3265, or email helpdesk@port.ac.uk (phoning is usually quicker to sort out and to get an instant answer, even if it is 'I don't know. This is a new problem. I shall see what I can find out' etc. Emails are good for after hours, and so they work on it straight away.
Trick 5)
New Wireless help at the union, shop nearto the cashpoint. See if it is your laptop thats the problem, pop your head around the corner, see if they know any information. And see if there systems work. If yours doesn't, and you REALLY need something off the portal, I am sure with some gentle 'please' and 'thank you' they would allow it.
Thats all I can think of for now. If I think of any more/discover, I shall add it here. Then again, if you have some hints and tips, why not share them?
Cheers all, Hope you found this useful
Robinb PS Yes, I have found the portal slow for about 7 days onn/off here and there. Right now, its as fast as lightning (I think my pet log needs patting again!)
