Over the last week, I've been really disheartened by the fact that I took the time out of my day to listen to the elections coverage on pure and the hustings at the union, only to be met by friends saying that they couldn't give a £^*& about it all.

I've been talking to a lot of people and getting pretty het up about the whole problem of student apathy. Indeed, I commented last week on the fact that the elections should not be a popularity contest. and still believe strongly that they shouldn't. But I'm starting to get very worried that they really might be. To me, one of the positions is an open and shut case, if only students were to see the manifestos, but the problem is that they aren't, they simply see the posters of who can get the most coverage of the university quarter.

Since asking many of my friends 'so, will you be voting?', I've been getting more and more angry over the fact that they seem to think that it has nothing to do with them, and trying to explain doesn't seem to help.

So yeah, the students of today are apathetic, maybe a lot of students always have been, but tonight I realised that I shouldn't be so angry about this... (at that age, I (ashamedly admit) I defaced a local election ballot paper). But I am now of an age where I have come to University to have the experience of getting involved in things like this.

Tonight I bumped into the girlfriend of a guy in my halls, and once again (as I have been doing for the last week) bought up the issue of the elections, and to my surprise, she actually came up with the names of some of the candidates, and had some idea of whom she'd like to vote for. I was completely taken aback by this, and was pretty shocked that a first year student really was taking an interest in this (unlike my second year colleagues).

Being here in Portsmouth, I have learnt a lot in the last week. I have a lot more of an understanding of student apathy (maybe we were all there once), but I have also realised that there are those students that are really motivated by the fact that they are now in a position to be able to vote, and are making the best of that fact.

Okay, enough of my rant. Now go and vote Wed-Fri til 1pm!

its a lot to expect, this place is not exactly akin to oxbridge. the majority of students just have different priorities and inherent values that may be thought of as more superficial than democracy. not much you can do about that...

completely agree........i admit last year i didn't vote as i didn't understand what was going on....but after listening to hustings on purefm, and reading the manifestos I can make an informed choice over who to vote for this year! I think these events need to be brought to the attention of more students, so we can really work to make our union a better place for every student. Also...if people say they are only voting because they get a free lolly is this really allowed? just an idea x

ooh dear, busy week campaigning- how was it for you guys? i'm knackered, altho having my arms stuck out for half the day like a scarecrow hasnt helped!!! but it was for a good cause!!

anyway, i am still shocked by the amount of people who dont care about the elections.

i got so many responses like "it'll make no difference", "nothing will change", "they dont do anything for me anyway", " the union is rubbish so how would it effect me"!!!!!

really surprising, and i think a lot more should be done to plant it into peoples heads that the sabb team do so much for the union and the students

i do know there are loads of people who do know but still

also lets hope there will be a justworthy victory for real student representation and not for popularity tonight!
