Last week, I was at the Union for 3 of the candidates hustings events. Afterwards, myself, Ben Norman, Steve Topazio, Jenny Leggott and a couple of others went over to Via Lattea for a celebration for International Women's Day, where we were treated to some fantastic music and a chilled atmosphere with lots of students who have a passion for making sure our Union is truly representative of its members.

After that, we all went up to CO2, where the Greek and Hellenic Society were just getting underway with a party that went on til 4am! What an amazing night! Everybody was dressed up - the Spice Girls (and boys!!) were there, some students had made some amazing sumo wrestling suits, and their fantastic president, Demitri was a very convincing hippy!

Then last night, we were invited along the the Hindu Society's Kalaa event, which was a feast for the eyes, the ears, and the stomach! With some amazing dancing, a comedy sketch, Devinder Singh of the Sikh Society spinning his swords again and a bangra show, not to mention some of the best samosas in Portsmouth...

This really is what the Union should be about!!!

Sarah, I agree, but...

Shame I, along with, i'm sure around 95% of the Students in Portsmouth knew nothing about any of the events mentioned.

Especially the event last week.

I see the 'Hindu Society's Kalaa' Event, listed on UPSU.net (http://www.upsu.net/diary/event/713.htm) however no mention about what it actually is!!

Maybe this is what the Union should be about, but I think a little better communication to Students about what is on might help.

I'm going to put Alex's, Tom's, or any one else from the Media and Pubs reps place in here before they get a chance to...

Fred, Communicating to in excess of 20,000 students is a difficult task. Many of them would be interested in an event at the Union and just as many of them would not! And Email might have gone around in the 'Social Life' newsletter. But there is the arguement that those who do sign up to it, don't read it, and of course not everyone signs up to it.

You may then suggest a a group email. However there is a fine line between sending an email to let people know there is a honest good event happening in the Union, to ... SPAM! You can find more about these rules that we have here (http://www.upsu.net/directory/privacy#emails)

As always there are ways that we could possibly improve our way of communicating all the bits of information we get to our members. This year we have concentrated heavily the Facebook side of things. We have many facebook groups and even a Facebook Page, where information goes up about events at the Union.

(you can find more about our Facebook Groups here)

Regards,

Well - After looking thru the facebook groups I see no mention of Hindu event, yet along this other event in Via Lattea that Sarah talks about!

Mr Worman has a big job on his hands if he is to get all this right!

I can't comment on this year as I don't take position until August. But i wonder how much it has to do with break down in communication between Sabb Officers, Staff Members and Society Members.

I'm pretty sure that should Alex have had the information to go on-line, it would have gone on-line. However if he was told there was an event happening at a certain time it wouldn't necessarily be his fault that there is no further information.

I wonder if further training so that Sabbs and full-time/part-time members of staff can up-date the events themselves as I'm sure the SADO for example would know more about the event than the MAPO ?

Again, a key example of TRAINING from my manifesto

Can people stop getting defensive please!

These were amazing events that were extremely well attended!

They were testament to the fact that our societies really are the key to building a better Union; one that embraces the diversity of the students here in Portsmouth: those students that found the events relevant to them, or took an interest in what our students do, knew they were going on, and that's what mattered.

All I was trying to say in my first post, was: let's hope that this is the direction in which our Union continues to grow.

My current stance is that anyone who wanted a better Union should have voted for one. My sympathy wanes.
