I can't get my head around the union booking the world's most expensive DJ! The guy costs an absolute bomb...I'll beleive it when I see it! Fair play though, look forward to this one.

yeah its odd, i mean fair play judge jules and dave pearce they are radio 1 jocks who will play anywhere- but oakenfold? the only chance you get to see him play in england these days is when he puts on a dedicated night at massive clubs in london (i.e heaven) or at the big festivals like global gathering (he was wicked this year). i can only guess he is doing a university tour or something. hopefully its a sign of things to come from the union this year, lets just hope they bother to make flyers for it, the worlds biggest dj is NOT gona be impressed by a few hundred people milling about in lux wondering who this guy with the straggly hair behind the decks is.........

You can find the Paul Oakenfold news article here.

As I understand it, this is part of a UK Universities tour, so the Union has been lucky enough to get the legend that is Oakie for a very good rate, I suspect

Yes, it is very good news that the union have booked him.

Still can't understand why he's the most expensive DJ though.

Yeah, the crap he's done recentlly has kind of put a shadow over his earlier work...I'm just hoping he doesn't cancel at the last minute. Oh and peachyraver, Oakenfold wasn't at Global this year! He headlined it in 2006 though I beleive. There is rumours Oakenfold costs about 10K for an hour and a half so kudos to the ents team for organising this!!!

Those rumours are true, from when he plays his sets in Ibiza. Whatever he is charging Pompey will be in respect to the ticket prices, remember, he's playing to less people which I know doesn't always affect prices (sometimes pushing them up if he's the headliner) but those prices are when he is playing to 10x the size crowd of the union.

Anyways, just seems to me that a man who seems to make it reasonable general knowledge that he's the most expensive DJ seems to be justification for him charging high prices!

That being said, who really care's what he's charging. All that matters is that he's coming to Pompey, the union have done a good job booking him, and it will be a wicked night!

errrrr, yes he was at global gathering this year he played the closing set on the friday night in the gloabl tent. never been his biggest fan but he smacked it that night!

he is one of the most expensive djs to book because, quite simply he is the reason rave culture and dance music exists in britain today. he is a pioneer and is reponsible (along with the likes of danny rampling) for bringing house music over to the U.k from ibiza in the late 80s and starting off the summer of love. so, he is a legend and a world renound 'superstar dj' and it is crazy that he has agreed to play at somewhere so insignificant as portsmouth student union. this man can pick and choose his gigs and was the first dj to play the glastonbury main stage and has even played on the great wall of china! so, my advice is to be there because it is a massive deal for the union!

yeah that is cool but you know some DJ's as big as him like to sometimes take their name to smaller things, and seeing as students are the main people that go out and party, if people have a good time then it keeps the demand for promoters to carry on booking him.

Besides, he has done good bringing a lot of the rave culture to the UK, but IMO a Dj's price tag should be based on his factors as a good DJ not for things like that.

Anyways, enough about that, I'm headed - the union have booked him, and that's all that matters!

Im liking the look of this years freshers fortnight, Looks easilly as good as last years!!!!! Good work you guys but a few general things i was wondering,

Oakenfold is popular (not something i would see but anyway), Would this money not have been better spent on redecorating? I mean yea sure Oakenfold will sell out the union for that night, but eventually the union will empty out again given a month or so as it allways does since it got gutted a few years back.

I recon the union needs to diversify from the other clubs in pompey or its going to be a bit naff on days other than wednesday, and even that day is now a bit emptier since Liquid appeared.

Loving the mass of fancy dress themed nights!!!!

Where has that hypnotist Tony Lee gone tho?!?!? He was classic last year, and much better than october fest!

I know i have a reputation of peddling pendulum but any chance of them appearing at the union this year? It was mentioned as a possibility last year and would be a sound bet.

yeah well i hope they have done something to change lux, or like you said after a month or so it will never be even near popular apart from wednesdays, and thats only cos of the sports teams.
oakenfold is also the same night as slinky who have booked judge jules and a host of other world class djs at liquid on the same night- so advertise oakie or no one will be there!

Maybe, but UPSU is cheaper than Slinky, and Oakie is a metric shedload better than Julesy, according to 9 out of 10 cats*.

* Not a scientific measure, but Oakie does cost a lot more than Jules, and is much better known.

yep, oakie is far better than jules will ever be, but slinky has a funktion 1 soundsystem, lots of decor and amzing lights and lasers. and its actually in a nightclub rather than a big empty white room

Well I'm please to see there seems to be a lot of interest in Paul Oakenfold playing, I can confirm that he will most definatly be here, check out national press!!
He is being supported by Ben Gold an extreamly popular up and coming DJ, both Paul and Ben will play for two hours, so for all those sceptics out there yes you do get a good set length!!

The best news is that we are selling advance tickets at only £6 yes that's right six tiny little pounds (on the door £8.00) they will be on sale from the UNION reception from the 24th September between 11:00hrs and 17:00hrs. Limited avalibility, sorry we currently don't have facilities to reserve tickets so first come first serve

Or you could purchase a party pack that give access to all events uptil 13th October for £20 (also gives priority enterance to all nights between this period)

And for those who would rather see Judge Jules I'm awaiting conformation on him being with us in Portsmouth Uni this December.

Excellent Scott, thanks for the update!!! Please please make sure this is advertised well and people know he is going to be in the Union. Oh and to everyone that is going to Slinky...go another time! Slinky is on every month, this might be the only chance you get to see one of the world's best DJs in a small venue
