Hi ladies and gentlemen,
I am going to tell you one story that happened to me this Saturday between 1 and 3 oclock. Some friends and me decided to meet for a football match at Bransbury Park at 1 oclock, when we arrived there we saw a group o children rounding the place, smoking and laying on the grass, ok, no problem; we started playing football and everything went well since the moment when a few of them decided to start throwing stones against us, shouting and saying the most cultural words they could utter, that was something like "f**k off" and so on, as far as I am not from here, I mean English, what you do in this cases:

1) Throw bigger stones against them as a war response (the Bush style) - I do not like this option.

2) Go and (try to) speak with them - we tried but they only could swear.

3) Call the police, which amazingly came in less than 20 minutes, just one lady-police, but was useless because 12 children run more than one police.

Please give me more ideas. As I said I am not used to deal with this in Spain, there If the children want to play they play with us, to enjoy, but do not try to cut the ball with a knife or never try to injure other people.

I'm really sorry you had that experience - and I've had a couple of similar experiences over the years. I've had chips thrown at me while clycling through Summerstown and rocks thrown at me and a group of friends late one night - the kids were smashing car windscreens and we were a moving target - much more fun.

In a way you really have to feel sorry for the kids - what kind of life are they living?

You should report it to the Police though - 0845 045 45 45

They need to hear about it so they can build a picture of what is going on.

At the Students' Union we are in the process of setting up a "Hate Crime Reporting Centre" so it is easier for our students to report incidents like this.

Thank u for your reply, I thought that this kind of things just happened to "foreigners", but as you explain that is something common to all the British society. Thanks God the police quickly appeared, thanks 999!
I think somebody (on the government) should try to solve this kind of behaviour on children aged from 5 to 15.

Me and some mates were attacked outside our house in the second year by 15 kids throwing bricks and glass at us. Luckily no one was badly hurt.

We took one kid to court and he was found guilty. woop

I've been chased but managed to out-run a group of lads....was at midnight walking through summerstown. I know someone who has been jumped on by a knife by a young lad in somerstown. I have problems with the neighbours son who is about 12 who keeps trying to break into the house. I've reported it to the police, but nothing was done. For non emergencies, phone 101 which puts you through to an operator similar to 999.

welcome to portsmouth mate. the place is full of the little sh*ts. im afraid your going to have to get used to it, cos there is nothing you can do about it. you might as well meet them with agression (i.e call down a few mates as back up) and go over and kick their faces in as thats the only way they will learn their lesson.

Can you go to prison in this country if you kick one of these violent "children" (let say between 10 and 16years old)???

That is not a good option but sometimes is the only one (just sometimes)

A question for kenlove, regarding your problem:
"I have problems with the neighbours son who is about 12 who keeps trying to break into the house"

Did you tell that to his parents? Wha they did?
Thanks.

No, it's not dude ;o) There's no point serving time (or worse) on account of some little scrote.

"Did you tell that to his parents? Wha they did?

There's no point trying to speak to the parents, they are his influence. They smoke weed around their 2 toddlers and the 12 year boy. Every morning when the boy attempts to go to school, you can hear abusive language being shouted and also when the kids go to bed. I've reported it once to a Community Support Officer, but no actions were taken (was told police would come round to find out more). The parents and the 12 year old boy throw their cigarette butts over the fence. Then there’s also our other neighbours who must be growing weed; smoke constantly pours out of the bedroom window and the top end of our road smells of weed– and they love to play their music really loud from 9am to 10pm. Think we’re getting used to it now.

As I read all your answers and news like:
"death of a University of Portsmouth student on October 26th in Hilsea", I am thinking about changing the headline to...VIOLENT PEOPLE or FAMILIES or whatever, It is quite sad.

I really hate to say this but the violent culture clashes you have come in contact with in Portsmouth are nothing really in comparison to other rougher city's in the UK for example i transferred into Portsmouth from Teesside University because Portsmouth is less dangerous.

But don't give up hope there are nice parts of Portsmouth and lots of lovely people. Its just a shame that the current “be a chav” (worthless credit to society) culture seem to have taken over.

I could be called a foreigner but as i have lived most of my life in the UK most people presume i am English, But even i get hassled by kids and drunk 40 year old men wanting a fight when i am just walking to Union at 7!

Until quite recently, I've always felt pretty safe in Portsmouth, but in the last few weeks, things seems to be happening like never before. Now maybe I've walked around the city with blinkers on, but it's really started to shock me, now more than ever, as I live really close to the Dog, where it appears someone may have been stabbed last night?

Unfortunately this is the state of our country. It is safe to say it doesn't just happen to people form other countries (and it is the opinion of some that it happens more to natives). Bad parenting and no discipline at school lead to pockets of inner cities being run by gangs of children, who can even kill when confronted (notably the murder of Garry Newlove: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/merseyside/7176471.stm ).

Although this problem exists in Portsmouth I have only had a few problems in the 5 years I've been here, so don't worry about it too much as there are worse places. Best thing to do is ignore them, as if you intervene it's you that'll end up locked up and not them.

Sadly, this is the state of our country. The rest of the world views this place with rose-tinted glasses, but when they get here it's not as great as they thought it'd be.

You people should get involved with some of the political societies at the union. You've all experienced the problems and you all have good ideas for solutions so why not take it a step further and try to get something done about it?

I don't accept the argument that nothing can be done so why bother. It's this attitude that causes the problems mentioned above because it allows them to escalate way out of control.

Demand an audience with Portsmouth South MP Mike Han**** and raise the issue of student safety. Start a petition to get something done and collect signatures around campus. Get the union behind you and run a full blown campaign!

Nothing like a bit of direct action.
