When is the Xmas ball? Is it at Guildhall again? When can we start buying tickets? Whose headlining?

I'm also assuming that there will be no Christmas Ball this year....would be nice to know though! Shame really as it's a fun event even if it is sooo over-priced.

Okay, there are lots of rumours about the Christmas Ball, i think a special event may be in the planning. But wait and see - don't count out some kind of big christmas party from the union

We've decided that as the Chrismas Balls have lost money and sold less and less tickets each year.... and seeing as there is massive growth in individual clubs and socs holding their own christmas events...... we won't hold one in the traditional way this year.

But there will be all sorts of Festive Frolics going on, it just won't cost you a fortune! - But keep the nice frocks xx

No, there is not going to be an xmas ball this year due to them never selling very well, but I gather the Union are going to do a christmassy night. There are talks of possibly having some kind of santas grotto in CO2, maybe big band in the waterhole doing carols and stuff, roasting chestnuts outside and many other festivities in the pipeline!!! So watch this space!

The union's plans sound alright but I am still really gutted that we aren't having a christmas ball this year. I had heard that they were planning on holding it in the union instead of the Guildhall, but to find out they are not having one at all is really disappointing. The last two christmas balls (especially 2005 with Rachel Stevens and the Chip Shop Boys for the last two years) were great fun!!
As a third year this was my last ball that I would have been able to go to and now my only chance is to fight for graduation ball tickets!
Carols and a santa's grotto might be kinda fun but I don't see it competing with other local club's christmas events.

I think if they advertised the Ball greater and announced an act before tickets were on sale and also included information of what's going on, then I think the Union would sell more tickets. I found people hesitated to buy tickets until knowing who was headlining. I suppose something Christmassy would be good at the union, but would not compare what can be offered at guildhall, it'll be a usual union night out but with Christmas music and a few Santa's and snowflakes hanging from the lighting rig.

Jo, an easy way to avoid the "fight" for graduation tickets is to get your request in for tickets as soon as you receive your graduation pack, and not wait and leave it like a lot of people did last year.

I completely agree with Kenlowe and Jo!!! The union needs to be better at advertising major events. The christmas events sound good, but they will never match having a ball at the end of the year.

I think i have to be in agreement with jo.....i'm really dissappointed there is no christmas ball this year ...it's the kind of thing you look forward too when all you have to think about is essays and exams towards the end of term. Although i like the idea of christmassy type stuff i still dont think it will have the same impact as the ball does.....everyone looks forward to dressing up and whose gonna be headlining and now its just gonna be like your regular purple weds with a few extras. Maybe i'll be wrong...maybe it'll be great but i think if the union wants to compete with the competition of other clubs in pompey it really needs to have some thing amazing up its sleeve.

i popped into the union for lunch in the waterhole today and on the tables were calendars for the unions 12 days of Christmas. reading through it, it looks like every other week at the union except for a christmassy film on one of the tuesdays and a bit of fake snow on an orange friday! Can u tell us if there is anything else planned cos from the looks of that the union doesn't seem to be putting any effort in to christmas events!

Ouch, mate that's pretty harsh. I've got the same flyer in front of me and it doesn't look like there's much room for extra information on it, so maybe there's more stuff to come that just didn't fit on the flyer?

(Total disclosure: I work for UPSU, not UPEL - the company who deal with trading at the Union - so I'm not involved in the creation and planning of these events ).

That's a good point Alex - Just for clarification...... the University trading company UPEL run the trading (bars/catering/events) side in the Union on a day-to-day basis, but it is the sabbatical officers of the Union who decide whether to run a ball as a special event - and hire a particular venue.

The Guildhall costs a fortune, plus loads more to decorate and the ticket sales for this event have gone down year after year. Although It's a bummer for the people who really wanted to go..... we're finding that now people are generally poorer beacause of the increased fees and can't afford to go to a ball with a high ticket price and associated costs - especially at a really expensive time of year.

As your Union we can't justify subsidizing the ball by many ££££££ when we could be spending it on Sports, Societies, Volunteering, representation for when things go wrong with people's courses or any of the other stuff we are bound by our constitution to do.

My sentiments are pretty much the same as Jo's - I'm really disappointed as the xmas ball the past two years has been great and all third years are very aware that there is a massive demand for the grad ball, whether you get ticket requests in early or not.
I've been to the last two xmas balls and to be honest, they were exactly the same (obviously the acts changed and obviously this was good for me as I Loooooved both!) - acts on the main stage, casino and big band in a side room, and the other side room has DJs. If the union/upel lost money both years, why was no attempt made to change the second year - surely if it was a last chance there wasn't much to lose? I don't want this taken as criticism, just an innocent and honest question!
I just feel as though the students are stopped from having their xmas ball because the Freshers' Ball bombed, and I think if the students were asked why, they could give many reasons (and this thread has provided most of those!) I really hope this year's xmas events work so next yera students can have their ball back!

its not meant to be harsh!... maybe just not phrased very well! and don't get me wrong i like the idea of some of the things that are on there and will probably go to the orange friday with the fake snow! and as always the christmas purple wednesday! I appreciate that there is limited room on that flyer but more details would be great ! I agree with hana that i do really hope that whatever christmas events the union has are a success so that maybe the ball is reconsidered for next year.

Well i have now seen the weeks events for the xmas run up and have to say it looks pretty dissappointing. ....There may not be enough room to advertise other things on the poster but surely the point of advertising is to let people know what's gonna be going on and what activities there are and so by leaving them off it defeats the whole point of advertising the christmas events? The union can't really expect people to turn up to these events on the say so that there 'might' be more things added?

It seems that the majority of posts on this forum are negative because people are pretty disappointed there is no ball.....so really it's understandable. Last year i'm pretty sure there was enough people at the ball to fill the union so maybe the union should have been used as the venue...admittedly it would cost money to decorate the union but at least the the ticket prices may not need to be so expensive.

From my point of view, the 'Freshers Ball' was great. Okay, so the Union lost money on it... but I think the thing that made it great was just to see so many people dressed up smartly, so why not choose one of the days in the lead up to christmas to have as a 'ball' without spending any money on it, and just have everyone dressed up smartly?

Ooh, I think I'm letting myself in for a bit of backlash here - 'what, no bands?, no entertainment?'.... well maybe Mario could do some turkey burgers?!
