There's a lot of good points in this thread. I agree that having non students in all the time would be a downside, but as Sarah says, I think it would only be on specific nights of the year. such as concerts. Several Union nightculbs ( because as aforementioned this is just a building and not the actual Union) open for concerts.
because of the fact that members of the public would be coming into the Union, the security etc would be heightened, and I've always had my bag checked when going into concerts , and they only ever have plastic pint glasses!. I think concerts at the Union would bring in revenue for the University to spend on other resources, but there are of course the downsides.
when people are talking about the 'scum of Portsmouth' coming into the Union. I really don't think your average 'football firm' member is going to come to a bar full of students to come and drink. and the average person from Portsmouth ? what makes us so much better than them, at the end of the day when people go to tiger tiger or the reg, there isnt that much trouble at all, and were all people ! i understand the idea of a safe haven for students, and it would be sensible to only open the union on specific nights due to the nature of the union being FOR students.
This thread, at the end of the day has provided debate around the subject, essentially what the questionarre was trying to to ?
Anyway.... |

After reading through all the opinions on this thread so far I have now come to my own. I feel the union should hold nights which accomodate people other than students. There are a few nights in the week where all the rooms aren't open and it makes sense to open them on these nights to get more money. We can all benefit from the extra revenue on the nights WE do go such as wednesday. Snakebite could perhaps be reduced to £1.50 and we could have better acts more frequently. Wed and Friday need to be kept student only but I only ever go in on a Wed anyway. |

I have to agree that over the past few years the union has declined, I'm now a third year student and I remember the union was definitely the best place to go for a night out and lux played cheese most of the night and everyone had fun and it was always packed. But now I must admit I'm disappointed with purple Wednesdays because they now play r & b and other similar types of music which were confined just to CO2, what is going on? At this current rate if liquid put a student night on a Wednesday the union would be empty.
Bring back the old purple Wednesdays and show the places around that the place to be is the union. |

To revive this thread on these dead forums...=]
I think communication within the union needs to improve between student union members and the staff that run the club and bars. For the last 2 months now the University of Portsmouth Gaming Society has been trying to arrange a date to host a LAN party event, which has the potential to bring in 100 gamers for 36 hours, and as a University Society event surely this should be welcomed.
As a new event not held before it has had it's delays, but it has come to the point where the date will have to be pushed back to the next academic year.
An event of this type, run by students to promote a club/society, is the kind of thing the union should grab up and use to promote themselves to other clubs and start looking to other clubs to run events, and increase the unions popularity in the student population.
This event is intended to be open to non-students and events at other unions (loughborough for one) are very successful. Bristol Uni are also starting a similar event and societies are attending LANs at other unions around the country.
An event of this type brings a bit of diversity into current events and there are no big LAN events of this type in the Portsmouth area. |
