I know that there was some live music last year, but they were bands that weren't really in the 'scene' any more. I've just been looking at Plymouth university website and they have newer bands playing.

One Night Only
Alphabeat
Roots Manuva

Exeter University also have live music, and it is open to people outside of the university too, coming up they have:

The Blackout
Roots Manuva
Funeral For A Friend
Easy Star All Stars
Nouvelle Vague
Hawkwind

Previous to this they had Pendulum live.

I see that the Alphabeat is being promoted by SJM Concerts, maybe it is time that the union went along these lines or something. It may mean opening up the union to non uni students for these nights, but if you were to offer students a cheaper ticket, which when entering they have to show their UP student card. As for drinks, you could have a set price and then a student discount when you show your card.

Surly having people coming in from outside the uni is only going to be a benefit, as it will bring in more revenue, which can then be put back into the union?

These are only university's that I have looked at, I'm sure if I looked at more then you would find the same sorts of bands playing.

This October / November there are some really good and big names playing at the Wedge, Guildhall and Pyramids, this is something that the Union is going to have to contend with along with all of the other clubs in the area.

yeah, I used to go to concerts at the Leicester union, and without restarting the 'should we let strangers into the union' debate , it always seemed to be packed, and I think it helped younger kids want to come to Uni.

With the possible closing of the pyramids, and the Wedgewood Rooms not being as big as Soton Guildhall, the Union really could be a great place to get some live bands into Portsmouth!
