The Athletic Union
The Athletic Union is the collective organisation for student sport at the University of Portsmouth. It comes under the umbrella of the Students’ Union and receives its funding directly from the Student Union’s block grant. Core values include equality and diversity whilst looking to cater for everyone regardless of ability.
As an organisation we have a membership of over 3500 students that continues to grow year on year, we cater for over 60 sports across 45 clubs with one club as diverse as the next.
The Athletic Unions mission statement is ‘to provide sport for all members with the opportunity to develop sport regardless of ability, creed or gender within a supportive and inclusive environment enhancing the University experience’
All our clubs are student run and student led providing individuals with the opportunity of learning skills that can adopted in later life, this also means that any success is solely down to the students, professional expertise is offered to the clubs that take a more serious approach to their sport which often results in a healthy mix of student staff involvement.

The AU Awards Ceremony
This is the most prestigious night in the Athletic union calendar by far; black ties and pretty frocks come out of the closet as the Athletic Union meets to celebrate its achievements over the past year. Individual colours awards are given to those that have gone above and beyond what is expected from them and team awards are also announced. Last year Women’s Football won the highly coveted ‘Club of the year award’ with Men’s lacrosse scooping ‘Team of the year’. With the standard of applicants increasing year on year the selection process is getting even harder, who will win the awards next year?
