EED Committee / Black Students' Rep
The Black student’s officer is elected to represent all students of African, Asian and Caribbean descent at both the local and national level, to campaign and strive on the issues which affect black students. One such example is the campaign to make Portsmouth Students' Union a Hate Crime reporting centre which would operate to protect students from racially motivated crime.
This year is a significant year for black student issues; October is Black history month, and the 2nd December commemorates the 200th anniversary of the abolition of Atlantic slavery. The Black Students' Officer will be key to organising events within the Union to mark this occasion.
The Black Students' Officer will also be called to represent Portsmouth students at a national level: the National Union of Students' Black Students’ Campaign is the largest constituency of black students in Europe.
The NUS Black Students' Conference is held on the 17th and 18th of May, and this is the opportunity for the Black Students' Officer to rally together, to vote on issues affecting black students across the country, and to coordinate nation wide campaigns. Another key opportunity to do this is the NUS anti-racism conference on the 28th of November.
The NUS, and therefore the University of Portsmouth Students' Union, strives against social, economic and cultural racism, and it is hoped that the Black Students' Officer shall provide representation for all students facing these issues.
