Summary of the role

The media and publications role incorporates all UPSU’s publicity material to increase awareness and participation in the Union, which the elected Sabbatical will work closely with the membership services team to produce.

Responsibilities

  1. Be responsible for all matters of communications and marketing between the Union and its members and the local community.
  2. Survey developments in communications and marketing within society and in other educational establishments and keep members informed of them.
  3. Co-ordinate the marketing activities and marketing strategy of the Union.
  4. Consult with relevant student representative bodies and other national bodies on communication matters and keep the relevant Committee(s) aware of them.
  5. Be the Editor in Chief of all Union Publications.
  6. Keep the Student Council and the Union Executive Committee informed of the decisions of any Media Executive Committee.
    Coordinate the student radio station.
  7. Be responsible for the maintenance and development of the Union web-site and ensure that its contents comply with Union policy.
  8. Make editorial decisions on the contents of publications when it is not possible to call an Editorial Board meeting.
  9. Consult with other Sabbatical Officers and Union Officials and advise on matters of communications and marketing and publication development
  10. Assist the Student Activities and Development Officer in the production of the placement material
  11. Advise the Trustees of the financial situation of the various publications for which they are responsible.
  12. Liaise with local and national media to enhance the coverage and promote Union events and actions.
  13. Promote the integration and enhance the reputation of the Union within the University and the local community.
  14. Be jointly responsible with the Education & Representation Officer for the promotion of Union Officers and Sabbatical Elections
  15. To serve as the key contact with the members of the Union as users of the services provided by the Union and in this context to co-ordinate mechanisms by which member's views are regularly reviewed.
  16. To provide for the effective co-ordination of activities between the Entertainments Committee and those responsible for the provision of all the Unions trading operations.
  17. To liaise with the Membership Services staff and the elected officers in ensuring that the publicity requirements of all departments are met and that the web site is kept up to date and relevant.

University of Portsmouth-led Meetings

The UoP Board of Governors
  • Quarterly
  • As President you will hold the role of Governor at The UOP. This Board holds the ultimate responsibility for all affairs of The UoP and you will share that corporate responsibility.
The UoP Student Academic & General Affairs Committee (SAGA)
  • 3 times a year
  • The Sabbatical team sit on this committee which is the principal medium through which Governors are directly able to hear the views and concerns of the students through the Students’ Union’s Sabbatical Officers.

 

UPSU-led Meetings

UoP Directorate
  • Bi-monthly
  • An informal meeting with The UoP Directorate Team to discuss issues affecting students at The UoP. The President will lead the Sabbatical team in all discussions and negotiations.
The UPSU Board of Trustees
  • Monthly
  • As Media & Publications Officer you will hold the role of Trustee at The UPSU. This Board holds the ultimate responsibility for all affairs of The UPSU and you will be part of the decision making process. The President will Chair this meeting.
PSUT Board of Directors
  • Monthly
  • As Media & Publications Officer you will attend the Portsmouth Students’ Union Trading Company Ltd (PSUT). This Board holds the ultimate responsibility for all affairs of PSUT and you will be part of the decision making process.
UPSU/UoP Steering Group
  • Bi-monthly
  • To liaise with The UoP, UPEL regarding any issues surrounding the Student Centre and the provision of services for students.
UPEL/UPSU Liaison Group
  • Monthly
  • To provide a forum to discuss Catering and Bars Services and Facilities and to discuss, liaise and agree on all issues affecting the management of the Student Centre Building.
The UPSU Finance & Staffing
  • Quarterly
  • As Media & Publications Officer you will attend this meeting which is responsible for the management of all The UPSU finances and staffing.
The UPSU / UPEL Student Activities Meeting
  • Monthly
  • To liaise with UPEL on all student led activities.
The UPSU Union Council
  • Monthly in term time
  • The Sabbatical Team report into the Union Council Committee which is made up of elected student representatives.
The UPSU AGM
  • Once a year
  • Union Council and the Sabbatical Team report back to the student membership on a yearly basis.
The UPSU Sabbatical Exec
  • Weekly
  • An informal meeting in which the Sabbatical Team discuss any operational issues.
The UPSU Media Executive
  • Monthly
  • The Media Exec meet to discuss any issues affecting student media.
