My manifesto
WHO AM I?
If you have been involved in the union over the past year I would hope you have stumbled across me. For the past 3 years I have been working in the Union as the nightclub photographer and have now taken on every media role within the union I can get my hands on! I have run my own design and photography company and have experience and many contacts throughout the various media industries most importantly radio and publishing. With all these skills I hope to come into the job offering a wealth of knowledge that I can share with you all!
WHAT WILL I DO?
UPSU has many incredible media outlets and best of all it offers you the chance to get involved. Like everything, however, it can be improved and here's what I will do if elected:
Marketing
It's vital everything the Union does and can offer is marketed clearly and concisely to Portsmouth students, I would like to:
- Build on the awareness of our publications, website and radio station with strong marketing campaigns and introduce set distribution points across campus.
- Develop contacts with the media outside of the university to promote the activities we as a student union are undertaking on a national scale.
- Increase awareness of both the Sports and Societies by video podcasting sports competitions and society events for the world to see.
Training
I would like to introduce training opportunities to enhance your experience with UPSU media, and give YOU the opportunities to develop a stronger CV. If elected I will:
- Build links with various media industries to offer training schemes.
- Further develop the S.T.A.N.D. training sessions to give you the skills you need to write, design, photograph or present a show.
- Train you on the latest software for media creation in our media suite.
Development
Finally, I would like to expand UPSU media by:
- Encouraging students to contribute to our media by developing contacts with University departments and UPSU societies.
- Podcast PURE FM shows and get PURE on the university buses
- Increase the amount and quality of contributions for Pugwash News, Purple Wednesday and Pugwash Magazine to win more awards!
VOTE FOR ME!
If you agree with what I've said here, please vote for me – TOM "THE CAMERAMAN" WORMAN – for Media & Publications Officer, and help make UPSU Media better than ever!

Candidate questions and answers
1 What do you envisage the role of the Media and Publications Officer to be?
Primarily it is the MAPO’s job to ensure that the union is promoting its clubs, societies and Union events to both its members and the outside world in interesting ways using our media outlets, whilst also acting as a facilitator to help students reach their potential in the media industries.
2 Communication with the student body lies solely with this position. What in your opinion is the best way to communicate with the student body?
Be creative! Whilst all of our media outlets are equally important – PURE FM, Pugwash News, PW’s, Pugwash Magazine and UPSU.net, if a student doesn’t engage with the media then it has been a waste of time. Creative communication is the best way to capture the target market especially with students.
3 Why are you attracted to Media?
Media for me is not just a passion, but a lifestyle. I live, sleep, eat and breathe anything related to media and have done since being a child. I also love helping people generate new ideas and encouraging them take it to completion, whether it’s an article or radio show.
4 How would you expand on the success of Pugwash, Pugwash News, Pure FM and upsu.net ?
Through training the success will expand upon itself - expertly trained students can help to make UPSU media even better. I would like to see UPSU media become closer with interaction between our various media outlets, whilst also developing the interactive media we offer with video and audio podcasts.
5 Who is the best communicator of all time and why?
Juan Cabral; who threw thousands of colours balls down a hill in San Francisco and filmed a gorilla drum to the beat of Phil Collins - In the air tonight. If you are looking for someone who can effectively convey a message with creativity and ingenuity this is your man.
6 This position becomes much easier with student participation. How do you plan on getting students involved in your ideas?
The opportunity to write, design or photograph for our 2 publications, produce a radio show, or get creative on the web that can reach in excess of 20,000 students is a fantastic opportunity to boost any CV combine this with effective industry training courses and you are onto a winner!
7 What experience have you gained so far in Media?
I am an internationally published photographer and own a successful design company. For the past 3 years I have been the Unions photographer and this year I have become the Pugwash News Design editor and a UPSU Web-Editor, whilst also working on video and graphic design projects for the Union.
8 As a sabbatical networking is essential and important, what is your best ‘networking line’?
Generally it is can I take your photo? This phrase has got me some great contacts and even better freebies over the time! But today it is: “For more information on me visit www.votetom.co.uk and make your vote count by voting: Tom ‘the cameraman’ Worman for Media and Publications Officer!”
