My one-minute candidate video

My manifesto

Hello fellow students I am Carl Jackson, studying for a Clinical Physiologist degree. The combined power of the student association has a huge potential to deliver a better environment for all 20, 000 students in this University. What has already been achieved by the current elected Sabbatical Officers has been great giving us a magnificent platform however I intend to take their innovated ideas to the next level.

My vision for the University of Portsmouth Student Union (UPSU) is to be a supportive, active union which recognises the diversity of its members that really listens and acts for all university members. The UPSU has to continue connecting with the student body and becoming more accessible and visible.

To encourage clear frequent communication as standard and raising the profile of UPSU with the encouragement and collaborative efforts of the sabbatical officers, this will provide crucial support and advice while responding visibly to the concerns of all students through campaigns.

To give democratic process right from the inner workings of UPSU to national unions, this is a priority as it will ensure all students are represented at all levels; while as a Sabb were completely supportive and available to work with all students on an individual basis, whilst representing them confidently and determinedly in the University and UPSU.

To negotiate a clear format for all harassment policies and have visible points of contact, in all university tutorial teams and support campaigns for student’s health and safety. To lobby the university to review training and teaching with regard to student’s academic performance and experience, while liaise with external organisations including the NUS for representation on a national level to ensure the equality of all student’s future.

To work with UPSU officers to ensure the widest possible support and representation for students and running local, national and international campaigns that give as a diversity of student as one global civilisation. I care about the wellbeing of each of my fellow student ranging from whether it’s they anguishing poverty or students being ripped off by the interest’s rates of student loans.

I believe my life experience will help in giving a good overall standard. Being able to give support in an assortment amount of ways through what I have learnt from my time in the Armed Services and years spent in Africa.

Candidate questions and answers

1 What do you envisage the role of the SADO to be?

As a Student Activities and Development Officer I visualize that I would be required to assist students with their individual and team development. I would continue to build up the role of societies within the Union while working with the societies to increase awareness and participation.

2 What experience do you have that might suit you to this role?

I believe my life experience will help in giving me an excellent overall standard. Being able to give support in an assortment of ways through what I have learnt from my time in the Armed Services and the few years spent in volunteering in Africa.

3 This position becomes much easier with student participation. How do you plan on getting students involved in your ideas?

The best way to get students involved is by listening to them. Advice and ideas from this year's committee's will only lead to improvements for next year and I'll continue to build upon the recent Sabbs success, in which keeps me in constant contact with societies to ensure their representation.

4 Why is volunteering important and why should students get involved?

A small endeavour from a person can lead to lifelong recollections for others; a number of the most significant ability in life is learnt from achievement. The volunteering projects give students the chance to develop new skills, face new experiences and undertake new challenges.

5 Societies are also another huge part of this role. If you could invent your own society what would it be and why?

My ideal society would be on that involved all individual, bringing all of us together to form lifelong friendships and allows us to all have the opportunity to do what we require. Wow this sound very similar to something I already belong to, of course the University itself and with its great diversity of students I already have my ideal society.

6 What qualities do you have that make you the best Union SADO?

My determination and passion to be friendly to everyone, while making the Union active in representing students though their societies and my willingness to listen and act upon ideas and suggestions made by my fellow student.

I will be a great SADO because I am willing to experiment with new things and like improving ways things are done.

7 As a Sabbatical Officer, networking is essential and important; what is your best networking line?

To introduce myself 'Hi my name is Carl, what are your ideas and how can I help with these'. However if I come up with an idea, then action is needed as a lot of great idea have been forgotten as they were not acted on. I have worked closely alongside many people throughout my life.

Most-admired person

The person I most admire is Nelson Mandela as he risked his own life and put the happiness of the people of Africa in front of his own. He made use of Fair Trade and I think that shows others that it isn't just about themselves all the time, it's about others too.
