First Great Western (FGW), who run services from Portsmouth to Cardiff, have agreed that significant extra investment is required to satisfy the needs of customers.

The investment will include the recruitment of drivers and guards, to ease staff shortages and also an extra five trains will be leased to service Portsmouth stations, giving a capacity increase of about 40%.

More Train Less Strain, a rail passenger pressure group, has said 'The £29m to be spent by FGW in an attempt to cling on to the franchise represents a significant victory for passenger power'.
