You may have become aware that the Students’ Union building has reduced its hours from last year. I would like to take this opportunity to explain what has happened and what our concerns are as the University of Portsmouth Students’ Union charity. How have the opening hours changed?Student Centre Hours 05-06
Student Centre Hours 06-07
Therefore the main differences are on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays when the building shuts at 9pm instead of midnight. Via Lattea opens later at 11am instead of 8am, and closes earlier at 3pm instead of 4pm. The situation has improved since the bleak picture that was being painted over the summer through debate and negotiation between the University, University of Portsmouth Enterprise Limited, the Board of Governors and the University of Portsmouth Students’ Union (meaning the sabbatical team). The University of Portsmouth Students’ Union are committed to making sure students have the best experience possible – therefore we will continue to apply pressure on the University for a Students’ Union building that is open all day everyday, as a safe place for students, and the only venue where they can feel secure from harassment and intimidation. UPSU’s ConcernsThe Students’ Union building was created to be open and available for all regardless of culture, creed, and religion. The amended opening hours means reduced opportunities for students to enjoy the best University experience possible as opposed to a building that is open until midnight.Students have the right to a safe environment to socialise, work, and run activities. Portsmouth is in the unique position of having a fantastic building with plenty of facilities – it would be madness not to offer them to students. The Way Ahead? Take Action!UPSU believes that it has achieved all that it can through meetings and discussions with the relevant shareholders. Now we need the student body to get active to apply further pressure on the University to change. So we need to hear from you – send me an e-mail. Think about how the amended opening hours affects you. When do you use the building? What do you use it for? For further information keep an eye on the website but most importantly come to the next Union Council on Thursday December 14thMany thanks, Chris Yorke President of the University of Portsmouth Students’ Union |
