For anyone that thinks that these things are a monotonous Q&A for the candidates to try and impress us, they are sadly mistaken.

Last night, the would-be MAPOs (Matt, Sam, James & Alex) not only had a little run through of their manifestos, with some Q&As after, but also had to mime 4 charades to us and then sing us a lovely little song (not sure whether James and Alex were at all cheating by pursueding their support to" ... So please come along to the Waterhole tonight (Friday 9th) to see who could be in charge of the Students' Union next year.

I met some random girl last night and got into a conversation about it.

She was complaining about things about the union, such as the music policy has changed so much that people don't know what sort of night they're going to anymore other than Purple Wednesdays.

I mentioned to her to come on hear and post her opinons, or tell one of the Sabb officers.

It seems all too common now for people to complain, but not do it in a structured way that lets the people in charge know exactly how people feel so they can act on it.

If no one knows then nothing will happen - its as simple as.

Just a quick note to say that i completely agree with sarah (gumqueen)!

At the end of the day boys and girls its our union so if you think it isnt running as smoothly as you would wish then come along to the remaining hustings and see who you think would be the best role to change all that.

I think the hustings are a great way of not only showing us who would be good for each role but also gives us an insight into the actual person behind the face.

So, at the end of the day even if you dont totally agree with the system come along to the remaining hustings as i am certain you will be surprised by it all, and at the least will have a laugh - which is part of the reason we are at portsmouth compared to any other place.

See you at the union tonight for 7pm then!

xx

hi gum queen

i think we here on the message board we share concerns about the union, and like 2 express our thoughts. i wish there were more of us on here.

i came along tonight, and will be along before the end of the week 2 another. i was really looking forward to putting forward my questions to both candidates. i would like to know as much as i could about t everyone (I dont know 2 much about the sportos 4 example), but there were only a few questions put forward to the candidates. yes i like to know people are sociable, but we know how much better OUR union could be if we had gr8 sabbs who are gr8 at their job. The union would work better and more people would hopefully get involved. i hope more people turn up at society council.

the manifestos are quite short, ok theres lots going on at uni, but this is a job, that we are selecting people for a job, id like to see what experience they have like a cv rather than seeing a contest being held in a pub.

my final thoughts (and long.. sorry) are..

get to know as much about the candidates as u can. try and find them next week when they will be about and ask questions to see whether u think they will be the best person for the job.

some positions only got one person for the job. im not saying this is good or bad, but the more people there are the better the chance that someone can be chosen that has the right skills for the job. if you think that in 2008 you could be in a position for one of the roles then go for it. if we can get the process better then than it is now then that will be gr8.

read each profile about the candidates. there should be some leaflets in the union. there are some at hustings, or read them online. also listen to podcasts of speeches on pure:fm if u have time.

attend hustings this week

vote in elections - thursday and friday nxt wk

and get involved in the union. it can be fun much like societies and sports. come along to societies council.

Matt, I'm afraid I can't remember your face - sorry fella.

I totally agree with your concerns and I think it's really important that the work is done to let students know *why* the elections are important to them.

I found this blog entry in the Warwick Uni blogs which sums up my feelings on this exactly; you might want to take a look.

It's nice to know the same issues seem to face the majority of Students' Unions across the country :)

/al

Another great hustings! But I still don't understand why more people don't turn up. When viewing the forums, there's always students that want to complain about something or another, and this is the chance to find out about the candidates and vote for someone that you think will do a good job.

Tonight I heard people talking about the fact that the elections are just a popularity contest, and this is absolutely not what it should be; of course, if you have a friend running, then vote for them if you believe they are worthy of the position, but for those of you that don't, come along and see what they're offering you.

When I went tonight, I didn't know either of the candidates, but after reading their manifestos, I had a pretty good idea of who I'd be voting for next week . Now that I've seen both of the candidates, I'm sticking with my decision. Don't make this think that you shouldn't come along, because I went yesterday with a similar thought in mind, and after seeing them, my vote for Media & Comms Officer will be a harder decision to make.

The elections should not be a popularity contest, because if you don't vote for the right people, you will just end up being more pessimistic about the union and the activities and support it offers.

If you don't vote at all, then you really have no leg to stand on when the union is not run in the way that you want it to be.

Sorry for the rant, but it's events like these that really give all you intellectuals something to think about - this is what being at University is supposed to be about, and it's the sort of thing that in the future you'll be proud to say 'yeah, I helped make that happen'. (rather than 'well, I mostly just stayed in and watched tele/surfed the net'')

Sarah.
