About RSS on UPSU.net

RSS is a way of sharing news and other information between websites, and it's used throughout UPSU.net for everything from up-to-the-minute news headlines from the BBC and Google, to the latest discussions on the UPSU.net forums, reading weather and sports results, and more.

You can use RSS feeds in a feed reader much like an e-mail program to get the latest news from many different websites all in one place.

Introduction

You might have noticed our live news section, with up-to-the-minute headlines from BBC and Google. All the news on these pages is pulled straight from the news agency's website each time you visit the page. This means we can show the latest news headlines on UPSU.net without employing a team of gophers to type the latest headlines in every minute of every... Well, you get the idea.

We also use RSS to create "feeds", or lists of news articles; one of our feeds lists all the latest top news stories from UPSU.net. You can also get the latest posts on the discussion forums as an RSS feed.

Why bother?

RSS feeds make it easy to put all the news and information that interests you - for example, your team's match results, the latest movie releases, today's weather, and pretty much anything else you can think of.

If you're new to RSS feeds, you might have clicked on the link for an RSS feed and been confronted with a page of what looks like gibberish.

How do I use RSS feeds?

To make the most of RSS feeds, you can either use a web browser such as Firefox which can deal with live bookmarks, which provides an RSS feed as a menu where you simply click on the headline you want to read (how?), or you can use a program or website known as a feed aggregator, which typically gives you a list of your chosen RSS feeds (or "subscriptions") on one side of the screen.

Clicking on a subscription then shows the latest news items in that feed on the other side of the screen. A great - and free - example of an online feed aggregator is Google Reader; because it's web based, you can access and read your RSS subscriptions from anywhere in the world and it's one which we at UPSU towers thoroughly recommend!

More about RSS
The following feeds are currently available on UPSU.net:
  • various news streams
  • daily events listings (all and by category)
  • latest forum posts

RSS feeds are often added to the site, allowing you to read just your own club's news, read only the posts in a certain forum, read blog entries by a certain member, or even read the comments made by other people on a news story or blog post.

We also use RSS to provide weather information on the site from Yahoo!, local news from Portsmouth.co.uk, music news from DJ Mag, BBC Radio 1 and Musicmen.co.uk, film and TV news, and loads more. See the RSS news section to find out more.

About Beta feeds

We are trialling a new system which can generate RSS feeds for a huge variety of content from UPSU.net. See below for the most popular of these feeds.

Because we are developing this system, things will move around and change (or even completely vanish) as we work on the project. For this reason, we recommend you continue to use our standard feeds system for now, but you are more than welcome to try out this system - just remember it might not work!

We appreciate your feedback to help us identify bugs in the system, so please let us know if you come across any problems by clicking here.
