Frequently asked questions

These are some of the most common questions we receive at the JobShop. If you have a question which isn't answered here, please contact us.

On this page:

Why can't I view employer information until I've signed in?

The JobShop is a service provided exclusively for the students of Portsmouth University. Because of this, we ask that all students who wish to use the JobShop register for a UPSU.net account (by getting an NUS card or signing up for a website-only account). Anyone with an @port.ac.uk e-mail address can sign up for a website-only account.

How do I apply for a job I see on the website?

Please see the "how to apply" box for instructions. If the vacancy has been filled, we would appreciate it if you could let us know so we can remove it from our website.

Where can I find help with my CV, application letters and interviews?

You can find some tips and information on building your CV in our CV tips pages, or try one of these services*:

* UPSU is not responsible for the content of external websites.

Transport: how do I get to the interview?

  • Click the "view map and directions" link (where available) on the job details page, or
  • Visit the travel information part of the site for more information on directions and transport

What are my working rights as an EEC or International student?

As International Students you must follow these regulations:

  • Get your visa stamp checked at the International Student Adviser's Office in Nuffield Centre.
  • During term time you are legally restricted to working up to 20 hours per week.
  • During vacation periods, e.g. Christmas, Easter and Summer Holidays you may work full-time.
  • If you are not sure of the exact vacation period dates please seek advice at the International Student Advisers' Office in Nuffield Centre.

Please note that failure to comply with these regulations could result in students being 'administratively removed' from the UK within 48 hours!
