TV Licence
You will hear all sorts of stories about students not paying their licence and getting away with it – don't listen! It might happen once in a blue moon but the vast majority of time you will get caught out, and more often than not find that you're landed with a hefty fine. For info about whether you need a licence, and how to get one sorted you should check the Government's website
Water/Gas/Electricity
Try and get these sorted out as soon as you can after moving in – wait and you risk being stuck with old tenant's unpaid bills! It's a good idea to sit down with all of your housemates and make sure that everyone is making a monthly contribution towards bills, as this can be much easier than chasing everyone for a lump sum after they've spent all of their loans.
Home Insurance
Students are often easy targets for thieves, and for information on keeping your house safe you can look here. Always be safe rather than sorry and take out contents insurance for your belongings.
