Safety on nights out

Whether you've just moved into halls or are in your third year and living in Fratton, most students will enjoy a night out or two each week in some of the many bars and clubs Portsmouth has to offer. Whilst you're out having a good time, it's important to remember that your first priority is your own safety. You can find information about responsible drinking here, but there are also a few things you can do to stay safe when you're out and about;

Plan Your Route

You probably spend hours picking out your dress or the right shirt, but not very often planning how you're going to get home. Spend a couple of minutes with friends what you're going to do, and you can reduce the risk of becoming a victim.

Taxis

Taxis are probably the safest way to make your way home after a night out, and if you split the fare between a couple of people you're never likely to spend more than a few pounds. If you find yourself without any money, the Union has set up a scheme with City Wide Taxis called the Get Home Safe card. Pick up one of these from the Union shop and you'll never be left struggling to find the money for a taxi. Always use a pre-booked taxi – it's the safest option!

Uni Bus

The University Bus doesn't run throughout the night, so don't count on it if you're planning on coming back in the early hours of the morning. If you're not staying out that late then be sure to check the timetable before you head out so you're not left waiting at the bus stop for ages!

Walking

Walking is not the best option but if you have to, never walk alone. All students are equally at risk - contrary to popular belief, men are statistically more likely to be assaulted on the way home than women.

Plan your route in advance sticking to main roads and footpaths and avoiding poorly lit areas – especially shortcuts such as parks and dingy alleyways.
