Welcome to UPSU Media

Printed media at the Union

The Union's printed media covers all areas of student life, from Pugwash with its features, news and reviews, to Purple Wednesdays with club and society news, match reports and in-depth features, and the essential Pompey Guide which introduces students to the great city that is Portsmouth at the start of each year.

Pugwash magazine

Pugwash is our 48-page glossy magazine, published 5 times a year. It's a great way of communicating with fellow students in Portsmouth - you can write anything, from our more tongue-in-cheek regulars to ground breaking features about your take on student experiences in Pompey.

We’re not just looking for writers and typists though - there are plenty of other very important ways you can contribute to the magazine: you could help with the hours of graphic design that go into each issue of the magazine, take photographs for the features and news, or put your illustration and design skills to use by creating some stunning artwork!

If you fancy being part of the Pugwash team all you have to do is either join up at the Freshers' or Refreshers' Fayres (held at the start of each semester) to sign up, or contact the Media & Publications Sabb officer, here

Purple Wednesdays magazine

Purple Wednesdays is our weekly clubs and societies magazine. Content is written by the clubs and societies themselves, and this year more than ever we’re looking for deadline-loving people who can help us edit and lay out the magazine every Tuesday night (and then help us down at the Union bar afterwards, if you’re into that kind of thing…!).

Pompey Guide

Published once a year, the Pompey Guide is your essential guide to everything going on in Portsmouth. Look out for a copy at the start of the year, or pop into the Sabb office in Gun House at the Union if you're desperate for a copy!

Student radio at the Union

Pure:FM

Pure:FM is our very own internet radio station run by students for students. If you think you might be the next Zane Lowe or Edith Bowman, this could be the way to stardom (or at least a way of getting plenty of valuable experience in radio!).

Pure:FM boasts two fully-equipped studios and an experienced committee - the people who run the station - who can train and guide you and get your voice broadcast on air and on the internet.

Being part of the radio team also offers you the opportunity to get your voice heard all over Portsmouth on FM radio through Express FM (93.7 FM), the local community radio station part funded by Portsmouth University.

Every Sunday on Express FM, the Pure:FM team have the "Pure Takeover" show which runs from 12pm-4pm. If you fancy giving it a go then all you have to do is ask - click here to get in contact with the Pure:FM team.

Multimedia at the Union

UPSU.net, Pugwashmag.com and Purplewednesdays.com

Our award-winning websites are the core of everything UPSU Media is about, with everything we print and broadcast being supported online.

The sites are always being developed, and we always need people to help us put news and features online, and develop new web pages, so if you have an eye for design, or you'd like to help us develop our new features, then this might be just the place for you!

Find out more about UPSU.net on the webteam page, or contact us for more information here.

Photography

If you ever visit the Union or take part in a Student Union event you wont be able to miss our photographers snapping away making sure you have a lasting memory from the night. Photography is a major part of a media, as they say "a picture paints a thousand words" and in all of our media productions we utilise photography to a great extent. Our photographers have the opportunity to work with various celebrities and bands across Portsmouth along with work being published across the UK in various national publications.
