Portsmouth student Rachel Williamson (21) and her crew celebrated after being crowned winners of the fifth FISU World Match Racing Championships held in Gazi, Crete from the 5th-12th July. The event hasn’t been won by a British team since 2000, making the achievement all the more overwhelming.
Rachel was selected in February by the RYA and BUSA (British Universities Sailing Association) to compete in one of two teams for GBR in the event. The crew dominated from the start winning 10 of the round robin races, going into the second round in 1st place, and going on to beat crews from France and then Ireland to secure a place in the final. An exceptional performance in the final gave the crew their title as they comfortably beat an Australian crew.
Congratulations to Rachel and the rest of her crew on such an achievement, we wish her more success in competitions to come!
