Student campaign demands after hours praying facilities for Muslim students
The University of Portsmouth Student's Union (UPSU) has launched a campaign to ensure Islamic students have an out of hours facilities to worship as their religion obligates them to.
The University supplies a dedicated Islamic prayer room to students however the closing times of this prevents students performing two of the the five daily prayers. UPSU, The university and the Islamic Society of Portsmouth are currently in debate regarding the opening times of a prayer room and trying to find a venue for a prayer room accessible at the required times.
The Student Development and Activities Officer Ben Norman is currently collecting signatures in support of the campaign.

There are places to worship in Portsmouth. Otherwise we would have to build a university chapel, or synagogue or temples.
Perhaps this call should be reconsidered.
Nobody is taking preference.. there are facilities available for all faiths in the Nuffield Centre.. there is a chaplaincy.. however if muslim students need this facility and are currently doing something about it.. it should be considered by the university.. and if given it should be used. However I agree there are places to worship in Portsmouth. Students of other faiths should also feel free to ask for facilities if they require them after closing time and can show that they do so. This will make it fair on other religions/cultures, not unfair. Muslims have one religion but can be from many cultures so this is a religious need, not cultural. I have many Muslim friends.
Also, this issue is not about pandering to one faith at the cost of others. It is ensureing that the University sees the welfare of its students as a top priority and offers the levels of welfare provision that other universities consider standard.
