Local man charged with murder of student Jed Sheridan found dead in prison cell.
Darren Abrams, 20, of Portsmouth was found hanged from his cell in a prison in Surrey. Abrams was charged with the murder of Portsmouth student Jed Sheridan in November.
Sheridan was found dead in his bed and a post mortem declared that severe head injuries had led to his death.
Abrams was remanded in custody at Highdown prison and was due to appear in court in January. A second man Terry Sewell, was also arrested over the murder.
Abrams was found dead in the small hours of Tuesday morning. Prison officials state that paramedics were called to the scene however the inmate later died in hospital.
A prison spokesperson stated "Our sympathies are with the family of Mr Abrams at this time."
The death will be investigated by The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman as a matter of course.
