Fair Trade Fashion Show review
(By Elle Gray, Student Support Sabbatical Officer) The Fashion Show took place on Monday, 16th October 2006 in Lux. This was the penultimate day of the Global Month of Action against Poverty, which saw events similar to those of the Make Poverty History campaign last year happening all over the world.
The models were ‘standing up against poverty’ in a fantastic evening of catwalk glamour and feel good vibes. Although we had a top international model and beautiful models from our own Student’s Union, the star of the show was 3 year old Jesme who modelled pixie boots and a really cute t-shirt ‘Give Peas a Chance’.
International model Steph Mekwuye believes in Fair-Trade and knows how much it benefits people in her native Africa ‘who work so hard and have so little to eat’. Steph, along with other models, was wearing the latest in designs from all the leading UK Fair-Trade suppliers - Peopletree, Hug, Epona Sportswear, Gossypium and Bishopston Trading.
Harriet Lamb, CBE, Executive Director of the Fair-Trade Foundation opened the event and even the Vice Chancellor came along. There was also live entertainment from the Dance club, Breakdancers and an African Acapella singing group as well as an after show party with local legends – The Sumo Djs.
The show highlighted the amazing range of Fair-Trade clothing now available, and as a Fair Trade University we were really proud to put on this event – the biggest in the south of England! We got great coverage on the BBC and local news – I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone involved especially the staff at UPSU for bringing it all together.
If you want to know more about Fair Trade events or how to get involved in any other campaigns – please contact Elle Gray, your Student Support Officer, on studentsupportofficer@upsu.net, or on 023 9284 3635.

Freshers' Fayre review - 4th & 5th October
This year saw the largest Freshers' Fayre to date. The setup of the event took 2 weeks which included the erection of the 3 massive marquees in Ravelin Park. There were over 180 stall holders including clubs, societies, commercial stall holders, volunteering groups, charities and University department.
The stage was packed full of demos by the clubs and societies which showcased the diversity that the Union respresents, from Indo Boarding to the Dance club. Literally thousands of you guys enjoyed the freebies and fun at the event, with several thousand joining up to your favourite club or trying out a new society.
If you missed the fayre, don't worry: you can still join clubs and societies. You can find the information online in the Get Involved pages, or make a short visit to the Student Resource Centre in the Union.

Pugwash in the running for third award!
On the morning of November 2nd, a letter landed on the table of our editor, Adrian Fraguela. The letter revealed how Pugwash had been shortlisted as one of the five Best Student Magazines in the country.
Pugwash has won this award on two previous occasions, in 2000 and 2003. The year is now 2006, and we have high hopes that the magazine could win the award once again.
The results will be announced in London at an awards ceremony on Friday 24th November, so keep your eyes peeled for the news!
When asked about the magazine being shortlisted, Adrian said "This is a massive boost to UPSU media as we haven't been on the shortlist for a few years.
"I'd like to thank all the students that contributed throughout the year and also the full time members of staff Mike Cooter, Steve Baker and Pier Powell for their tremendous efforts in keeping the magazine running".
