Last Wednesday saw Pompey record their first ever Varsity win against the University of Chichester. On a beautiful sunny afternoon 13 fixtures were fiercely contested.

The rules were simple; the first University to reach seven wins were victorious.

The day didn’t start that well for the home team. Losses were sustained at Women’s rugby, Men’s football feconds and Women’s football firsts.

The day took a turn for the worst when Men’s frisbee lost, meaning Pompey were up against it!

At last, heroes emerged; Men’s rugby thrashed their opponents and Women’s frisbee did the business also. The activity at Langstone came to a close with Men’s football first team – this, for me, was the tie of the day.

Traditionally Pompey has quite a relaxed attitude towards Chichester, with them absolutely hating us with a passion. I think they suffer from small institute syndrome!

However that being said, our football guys were really up for the fight which was a pleasure to see at Varsity level.

This game was one of the most intense games of football I’ve seen at Uni.

There was one red card (naughty Kosta!), but in truth should have been four or five, not to mention the copious amount of yellows! Unfortunately we lost the game 1-0 to a goal that didn’t even cross the line, but hey ho, you live and learn.

This put us 5-2 down overall with only the indoor sports left to play.

News of a further loss, this time Women’s badminton, began to filter through. This meant we were 6-2 down with 5 to play - I thought we were down and out as did everyone else!

Not so! Up popped Men’s badminton, Mixed volleyball, Men’s basketball and Men’s tennis, all with wins making the score 6-6 with one to play – bowling!

Who would have thought, eh? Our hopes rested on who knocked down the most skittles! We waited tensely for the result, which turned out to be a thumping 16-0 victory, resulting in our first Varsity win ever; what a way to do it! Chichester who!?

What a win, to come back from 6-2 down to win 7-6 was an absolute dream, I for one thought we dead and buried!

Bring on next year and we will stuff em again! A truly beautiful day to be a Pompey sporto! Well done guys
