It's LGBT history month - how much do you know?

LGBT history logoHow much do you know about LGBT History? February 2007 is LGBT History Month and there’s a wide range of events being held in Portsmouth, giving you an opportunity to learn more about the amazing history of our community.

Do you know your Wolfenden Report from your Stonewall, or do you think Radclyffe Hall is somewhere you can hold a civil partnership?

A packed month begins with a Rainbow Flag, designed especially for LGBT History Month, being presented to the Chief Executive of  Portsmouth City Council on February 1st.

Events planned include a Drag King Workshop at Martha’s on the 3rd, one of the cities most popular gay venues.  This is presented by Inscape and celebrity Drag King extraordinaire Ingo will be teaching the tricks on the trade on how to put on a successful Drag King act.  For more information call Scott on 02392 289 950.

On the 8th at Inscape, there’s a Drag Queen Workshop from 7pm being hosted by the one and only Dave Lynn, star of Channel 4’s ‘Faking It.’  Again, for more information contact Scott on the number given above.

Throughout the month at the University of Portsmouth Union, Central Library and City Museum there will be a special multi-media display highlighting the achievements, struggles of individuals and communities in fighting and securing equality for the LGBT community.

At the Third Floor Arts Centre on the 10th, there’s a special evening with  two speakers including Gino Meriano from Pink Weddings, one of the events sponsors.. This begins at 7pm and tickets cost £3.50

On February 17th dare you go Ghost Hunting in Southsea Castle? Some of you may be used to dark rooms and being a Screaming Queen but we’re talking one of the South’s most Haunted castles here!  The event runs from 8.30pm to a spooky 2am and there’s full access to ghost hunting equipment and a medium on hand as well. On the 21st, there’s a public lecture at the University of Portsmouth that looks at the impact of Armistead Maupin’s ‘Tales of The City.’ Entitled ‘Deciphering ‘Madrigal’ – Queering the Screen’ this is presented by Peter Billingham at the Portland Building at the University of Portsmouth. Admission is free, however places are limited so to make your reservation contact events@port.ac.uk or call 02392 843 757.  Armistead Maupin has relayed his “sincere gratitude and thrill at hearing that a lecture will be given about the impact of his books”.
