Controversial plans to open up swathes of Southsea Common to car parking have been passed by the council.

The plans allow for the common to be used to park cars for up to 17 days a year.

It comes despite a petition with more than 100 signatures objecting to the plans. Southsea Cllr Linda Symes said she was disappointed at the move. "This is one of the only green lungs in the city", she said.

Cars parking on the common is not a new system, cars have been parked on the common for the past 25 years or so.

However the new plans allow for more usage and better organisation.

One prediction is that the parking could net the council an extra £30,000 a year in revenues.
