Dot Mobile, the student-focused mobile phone operator, have been placed into administration.

Dot mobile, who were signing customers up in student unions across the country - including our own - have since the 18th March been placed in administration.

The company states on its website that customer's "contract of service remains unaffected. [and that] DOT will continue to invoice and collect payments in the normal way."

The company has also reassured customers that "Vodafone, who are the providers of your airtime service contract, have reached agreement with the administrator to ensure there is no interruption to the airtime services available to you."

Doesn't come as a surprise really, the stand in the union didn't get many visitors after Fresher's week and the packages weren't really competitive. Plus, all this units business made it fairly complicated!

Dam I joined them in November...

They offer too good a deal, with £40 for everyone you refer you can end up in profit

I've been with them for 12 months... wouldn't say they're uncompetitive! Especially with the Stop-the-Clock style features, and flexible spending.... I always did wonder how they were making any money. I guess they weren't!

It's good that the service isn't affected, but they still owe me £50 in referral cash, and I'm wondering if I'll ever see that money now :(

It's such a shame.
I have been with them for the third year now and never been so happy.
Before signing up for the second and the third year I have searched and searched and found no other better deals:
- possibility to have the latest phone withouth having to sign a contract for 18 months;
- units not used rolled over (I ended up with 3000 units per month);
- a txt became 1/2 unit and I think in my second year I even had DOUBLE TXT;

Honestly, where can you find a better deal?
Flex by T-mobile is quite close but does not have roll-over!

I am so sorry for them, I just hope that Vodafone will save Dot and that they will still be offering the same plans!

Dot, keep up!

I phoned up Ofcom, and they said that they are legally required to honur your contract, even in administration. So, until your contract ends, you get the deal you signed up for. I also phoned up Vofadone and they said they have a special department to try and match the deal that you've had from a company thats gone in to administration if your contract ends. Worth bearing in mind, as I think Vodafone is a good network to stay with.

I have heard that Trading Standards have said that all customers have the right to cancel their contract as Vodafone can't offer Units (they don't have the billing engine ). Therefore keep your new Dot handset (it's yours even if you have only just joined) get your PAC, and swap to a sim only deal with loads more minutes and Txts. Vodafone think that we will all just sign a new deal with them - I think not!

@ Wayne I doubt it, you would be cut off

@ Guy Vodafone provide the network, dot mobile and vodafone are separate companies

@ Phil I think someone will buy them out if that happens

IF they go bust how can they honour our contracts I went with dot because you get the best deal. If I go with someone else I won't be able to afford to have a phone. Will Dot go bust?

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I'm aware that you all have a lot of questions. I can assure you that as the writer of this article and the News Editor I'm trying to get answers.

I've been in contact with the members of staff from DOT who as the company is now being run by administrators are unable to comment. I am also in consultation with both Vodafone and Ofcom so as to give you all as many answers as I can.

As for The Union knowing any more, Dot mobile paid for advertising and selling space, and I assure you that as more information becomes available I will endeavour to supply it.

I'm not at Portsmouth but I saw this article when searching for what had happened to dot as I too am currently using their service. If you check dot's website it answers alot of your questions.
1: You won't be able to end your contract early as we all signed to a vodafone contract in the first place, its just dot are selling it as an agent.
2: You can still get your referral money, I rang to sort mine out and they are more than happy to send you a cheque if you're entitled to it.
3: Even though we will all technically be vodafone customers from now on, they have to honour our contracts as they were agreed upon before any of these changes took place. If vodafone do decide that they don't want to continue using the units system then they are breaching their part of the contract, in which case you'll get to keep your mobile for free and not suffer any charges. If you check the website though vodafone have stressed they won't do this.
If you have any more questions I'd say the best place to look is dots website or phone them.
I hope thats shed some light on the subject

IMPORTANT COMMUNICATION

1. You may have heard that Dot Mobile was placed into administration on 18th March 2008. What you might not know is that Dot Mobile phones always ran on the Vodafone network anyway. Now Vodafone Ltd have reached agreement with the administrators (Smith & Williamson) to continue to manage the Dot Mobile customer base.
2. Over the next couple of months Vodafone will be moving all Dot Mobile customers onto their systems. So now they'll not only be providing your network, but also managing your account and sending you your bills as well.
3. Don't worry, your mobile number will stay the same and there'll be no interruption to your service.
4. It's worth noting that your terms and conditions will remain the same.
5. You might have some other questions, so please click here for some answers to some of the frequently asked ones about contracts, connections and billings.

Thank you

Vodafone are keeping all the same deals as Dot so not really going to be any different

well, its funny really. Dot were doing really rather well. they were an MVNO, which means that they piggyback on another larger network, Vodafone. Their business model relied on very low overheads to keep their prices low, hence why they were so competitively priced. Do you know why they went into admin? well, legally, no one apart from dot and the administrators do. But its funny that their MVNO piggybacking licence with Vodafone was up for re-newel in may 09. Vodafone refused to renew that licence. They couldn't find an alternative supplier and therefore went bust. but thats all coincidence.
