About the publication
Pugwash News & Purple Wednesdays newspaper is the Union's newest publication, with a fortnightly, campus-wide distribution.
The publication is printed on high-quality recycled news print and comprises a mixture of full colour and black/white pages.
You can find information on advertising opportunities and rates, below. Please note that times are accurate at the time of publication, but may be subject to change.
Advert positions and types
The layouts below give an indication of what advert space is available on which pages. Please scroll down further for a list of advertising rates per page type, and (even further down) a table detailing these rates in one handy place.
Advertising positions by page:
Pink areas denote space available for advertising on colour pages; dark grey areas denote monochrome advertising space. This information is provided for guidance only - please contact us to discuss your requirements.

Advertising rates per page type:
Advert pricing
Advert pricing is based on the advert's location in the publication - front page, inside pages, or back page - and its position on the page.
Pages are divided horizontally along the dividing line into top 3/4 and bottom 1/4 areas, and vertically by the 5 column edges.
Most pages can take advertising which makes up almost any combination of these areas - for example, an inside page could have a combination of one 3-column top 3/4 advert (for

Advert sizes
Pugwash News is based on a 5-column layout. Adverts can span between one and five columns, and must be sized to fit the following dimensions.
Note that all sizes in mm - width x height (sizes in brackets are pixel sizes at 150dpi):
- Full page height adverts:
- 1 column: 49.6 x 342.0 (293 x 2020)
- 2 columns: 103.2 x 342.0 (609 x 2020)
- 3 columns: 156.8 x 342.0 (926 x 2020)
- 4 columns: 210.4 x 342.0 (1243 x 2020)
- 5 columns: 264.0 x 342.0 (1559 x 2020)
- 3/4 height (page top) adverts:
- 1 column: 49.6 x 250.0 (293 x 1476)
- 2 columns: 103.2 x 250.0 (609 x 1476)
- 3 columns: 156.8 x 250.0 (926 x 1476)
- 4 columns: 210.4 x 250.0 (1243 x 1476)

Copy deadlines
Adverts must be submitted for publication no later than the Wednesday before going to print (i.e. one week before publication date). This allows time for the designers to ensure the advert will be represented properly in the publication.
Technical requirements and formats
Adverts may be in any one of the following formats, but please note that some formats will incur a processing charge to cover the costs of converting to a format compatible with our press - these charges are detailed below.
There is no charge for adverts in the following formats:
- Adobe PDF, CMYK or monochrome, 150 or 300dpi
- TIFF, CMYK or monochrome, 150 or 300dpi
The following formats will incur a £10 designer's charge:
- JPEG/JPG/GIF/PNG/BMP/WBMP
- Images saved as RGB (instead of CMYK or monochrome)
- Images below 150dpi
Please note the following:
- most graphic design packages will allow you to output your advert content in a compatible format, for example a CMYK TIFF
- images below 150 dpi will almost always appear "fuzzy" when printed, and will detract from the quality of your advert
Acceptable adverts policy
Please note that the Union reserves the right to refuse advertising under its constitutional obligations, and its terms and requirements of membership.
Should we have any queries concerning an advert placed with us, we will make every effort to resolve the issue in line with our advertising agreements.
