Sublime Stars in Nottingham

Lost mini-bus keys, a tournament, a trip to A&E, an attempted brake and drinking games……. What more could you ask for?
On Friday 24th November, the Sublime stars (women’s Ultimate Frisbee team) headed up to Nottingham for a 1-day tournament. Little did they know about the fun and games they were going to witness…. 7.30pm outside the union, ‘I’m just off to get the minibus’ said Dan, half an hour later still no sign…. We then went to investigate and found that there was a minibus, however no keys anywhere! Eventually they were found and off we went, with everyone a little bit excited about the fact we actually had a proper Portsmouth bus, everyone apart from the driver that is!
On Saturday morning we found that we were seeded 6th, our first game was up against Loughborough. We got off to an awesome start going 4-0 up within the first 10 minutes with some great grabs from Rachel and some nice cuts from Monica. We then seemed to let our foot off the gas, as we got a little relaxed on D, allowing them to use there smooth offence effectively, bringing the final score to 5-4.
Next up, Cambridge. This game was very hard fought with lots of D’s, in particular some awesome ones from Alex and Perks. We had some great flow on our offence with Lauren always in the right place at the right time, it seemed. But we ended up losing with the score line not reflecting how well we had played.
Muschiono were next, this was a mixture of Nottingham uni and open Nottingham players. It was a very intense game with lots of overheads getting us points, but very much a team effort. We busted out zone, which Laura played extremely well in considering she had never played it before. We took them to a sudden death situation, tied at 4-4, however they seemed to get the better of us and caught a huck into the end zone. But Gem got pay back on the girl that caught it by a running pin to the wall… oops!
The Warwick Bears match is always a hard fought one, as we always seem to meet them in finals. This time we were going to show them who’s boss! It was a very close game, ending in a 6-4 win over them but not without lots of hard work from everyone. However Gem seemed to take the term run through the disc too literally and ran through the disc to get the D, but didn’t stop. Clattering into the board, separating both pitches and ended up in A & E for the rest of the tournament. This is where the bus had had an attempted brake in, obviously the high-tech security of the Uni minibuses outdid them and they got away with only the lock!
With Laura and Gemma now both out of action it was iron woman for the last 2 games. Birmingham was next, with the girls giving them a good thrashing, with the score line of 10-2.
Boogie queens was the last match of the day, if we won this we would have been in the final against Warwick, but the tired legs against a tough zone defence, proved to much. However we worked it well, with a lot of blades being thrown. Rachel’s highlight of the game (or not!) was when they played the hypochondriac call mid game, to waste time! Believe me I could see the steam coming out of Rachel’s ears!
With all the games done and dusted, the race back to Pompey for the women’s captains 21st Birthday was on! After drinking games on the bus, the wail of the girls in the back left much to be desired!
Ties all round this week:
MVP – Rachel Punch and Gemma Gale
MIP – Lauren Hartny-Mills and Sarah Perkin
