  • It's Christmas...Time for Good News!
    Written by

So it is Christmas time...the christmas trees are getting decorated...the warm jumpers getting pulled from the back of the wardrobe and the first chocolate coins making their appearance.

It has been six months already, and my time as President is half way through, but let us finish this half with some of the successes:

    • Establishing the Mamas and Papas group and hearing the voice of student parents
    • The Naked Debate - although this took a lot of time to resolve I see this as a really positive experience where students got to express their views about a controversial issue in a safe environment.
    • Celebration Event - Sheila Hancock finally got to meet the new sabbatical team, we got to officially open our new academic spaces, students showcased their talent and our Union strategy was presented.
    • NUS delegate elections and Student Officer Byelections took place, with Black Student Officer and Disabled Student Officer being filled.
    • The Blade - getting sprinklers in to the tallest halls of residence in Europe - Win
    • MSc Crisis and Disaster Management - saved students £22,000 in Benchmark fees - Win
    • Union Redevelopment - Last week I presented plans for redevelopment to Directorate with all plans being approved - Win - 2012 will see assisted door entry being installed, walls and ceilings being redecorated, renovation of toilets, new furniture in 3rd space and the function rooms, the Union shop being transformed over summer.

I am looking forward to 2012 and hope that we will have even more wins :)

Merry Christmas and remember we can make life better, so let us know what we can change.

Well for some of you this may have been long awaited, and for others you probably just want to take a look through the site without having to read the 'presidents words of wisdom'. However, as I am here to serve you, I though I might as well write a little something for all.

I must admit when I came into office this time round, it was completely different to before. I definitely think as a second year sabbatical time passes by much faster and the feeling of being on a conveyer-belt ready to slip off the other end is intense. However like everything else you just got to get on with it and do what you can.

So some of the big things that I have been working on include; employability - setting up Hire Me! our new mini-site dedicated to everything work related, alongside this The Professionals will soon make an appearance; a scheme to allow students to be involved with projects within the Union and gaining valuable real world experience, and we are also working closely with Purple Door to get the best ever employability campaign up and running for the new term.

Representation and Governance - making sure we have students representatives and associations set up for all under-represented students, at the moment my concentration is on our new Mamas and Papas group for student parents - and the little bubbas are soooooo cute :) Not sure if anyone knows what the dooda I am talking about when I say governance, but one of our Union values is transparency and at the moment there is nada in terms of accessing Trustee minutes, seeing who your trustees are or even knowing when they meet, so this is going to change with a brand spanking new, Governance website - I can hear the cry of enjoyment already :)

In order not to bore you to death the rest of the projects I have been working on will come in the second installment, which will include results from the disability audit, plans for the Union, elections and much much more.

I will finish with dealing with the unexpected. When I came into office I was aniticipating a quiet year, last year we didn't have any major problems so from going on previous experience another quiet year was surely on the cards....Wrong...this year so far has been fraught with trials and tests:

    • Getting sprinklers in the Blade building (the highest halls of residence in Europe) - WIN
    • The Naked Calendar - this took up a lot of my time, trying to retrieve photos and file for copyright whilst battling newspapers and trying to allow students to debate this issue in a safe environment - but I think from all of this we have safer prodecures in place for all volunteers
    • Anti-social behaviour - there are a few little rascals out there who love to be a nuisance but I do want to say in thirty years you may be living next to rowdy students just like you and what would you do then????? Also we are working with the Uni and Council on tackling this issue.
    • Benchmark fees? - well some courses think it is fine to charge benchmark fees without students having heard anything about it - but don't worry I worked with these students to wipe these fees saving students on this course £22,000 - WIN
    • Eldon closures - an action plan is in the pipeline and we are working with UCU to tackle this issue together.

And at the moment I think these are the big tests but I am sure there are plenty more to come and keep me busy :) If there is anything you want changed or are struggling with then get in touch with your friendly sabbaticals.
