Plans for Monday 11th January

Assuming that weather conditions do not worsen significantly over the weekend, the University will reopen on Monday 11th Jan, with a working day from 9am to 5pm. By 9am, University buildings should have heating and power and at least one accessible entrance. Please take care on all roads and pavements: UoP can only clear areas within the university’s ownership

16x16_snowwarning Fri (13:35) The university is planning some facilities to be open over the weekend.
The University Library is open until 4pm today, along with the Library Open Access area and the Coffee Shop. These facilities will also be open from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, but closed on Sunday.
Fines have been waived through to Monday. We will keep you updated on the opening times for next week.

Gym opening times
St Paul’s gym and sports hall plan to open over the weekend, Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm, weather permitting. Nuffield Sports Centre may be open for some classes but please check this site or call 023 9284 5503 during open hours to confirm.

- St Paul’s Gym will open from 8am with gym facilities and as many
classes as possible. Please call 023 9284 5503 to check on classes.

Due to the continued icy conditions, safe access to the remaining
University buildings cannot be guaranteed. UoP will continue their work over the next few days to try to ensure safe access ready for Monday, however this will be dependent on conditions over the weekend.

16x16_snowwarning Thu (13:25): Two buildings that will be open for staff and students on Friday:–

16x16_snowwarning Thu (13:20): The Vice Chancellor has advised that it is unlikely that University buildings will be open tomorrow, Friday 8th Jan. The ice and snow has made access to buildings and car parks extremely hazardous.

Please keep up to date via upsu.net/snow. The conditions are being constantly monitored and we
will receive a further update by 8.30am tomorrow.

16x16_snowwarningThu (11:28): University Library will be open from 12-3pm today.

16x16_snowwarning THU (8:29): University Library will not charge fines for non-returnal of books today and yesterday as it too remains shut.

16x16_snowwarning THU (8:19): All University buildings will remain closed today. This includes the Library and all departmental buildings.

16x16_snowwarning THU (8:13): Due to severe icy weather conditions in Portsmouth and the surrounding areas the University will remain closed today too.

16x16_snowwarning THU (8.11): We can assume that assume 9am lectures will not be running as everyone will be assessing the conditions in the morning, as early as possible.

16x16_snowwarning WED: The Vice Chancellor will advise before 8.30am tomorrow, Thursday 7th Jan, whether the University will remain closed. Check back here before then for further information.

16x16_snowwarning WED: It appears that the UoP intersite bus has been suspended until further notice as the route is 'impassable' in places.

The University will make any decisions about any changes to normal teaching, assessments and services as it is required.

Any significant changes will be communicated via the Students' Union special snow site www.upsu.net/snow, www.port.ac.uk/lookup and your University Email.

However, it may not be possible to communicate disruption to individual lectures, seminars or other classes in advance. The current advice from the University is that for the latest information on lectures and classes today contact your School or Department directly www.port.ac.uk/aboutus/

ACADEMIC ADVICE

An update to current academic advice was issued at 11:03 7/01/2010

- All deadlines for the submission of coursework should be revised to Friday 15th January 2010. This means that any coursework assesments that were due on 6th January through to 14th January inclusive will now have a deadline of 15th January. Any student who wants to re-submit a coursework assessment they have already submitted and that was due on these dates (i.e. 6th January to 14th January inclusive) will be allowed to do so.

- All other forms of assessment that were due to be taken between 6th January and 11th January inclusive should have a deferral automatically set if the student has missed the assessment for any reason.

- Students will not have to submit ECFs in order for the actions at 1 and 2 above to be taken - these actions will automatically apply.

- Students worried about placements should contact their departments for answers to any queries about this but should not do so until the University re-opens.

- Students should keep checking the website at www.port.ac.uk/snow or upsu.net/snow for further information but are requested not to contact the Academic Registrar directly on these matters as he cannot answer the volume of emails or many of the detailed queries being raised.

Students should contact their department directly once it has reopened if they have any questions regarding assessment. For further information and advice on the ECF process you should contact the Union's Education and Representation Officer on 02392 84 3634 once the snow has passed.
